Houston Brahs Assemble. Aware me on the area, work might relocate me there.

Title says it all. My work might be opening its doors in Houston and my boss told me I would be offered a job down there if we do. Ive been looking to move now for a while, so aware me on the area. I know its not the most desirable city in TX but im happy to be out of NJ. BTW, I will continue to vote solid red, I wont NJ up your TX.

My brother lives there. Works in oil and gas. I had some ridiculously good food there. But the summer is absolutely hellacious. Tough to be outside at all. And property taxes are through the roof. But they're also about to legalize suppressors that are made in TX, so that's awesome.

Do you have a family or solo? What type of place are you looking for? "Houston" is a huge area, you could drive hour+ in any direction and still be in Houston. Also what is your budget? Inb4 your budget puts you in Sunnyside

Me + wife. We are looking to rent for at least the first year, wife would rather a house but I am okay with either an apartment or house. Right now we spend 1700/mo on a 2/1 that has 1k ft2, we have more money to spend but I would rather start with what I already have budgeted. In terms of location, we dont mind city/suburbs, I am just trying to avoid driving 1hr plus to work. Not sure where it will be yet so its hard to say.

I deal with the "liberal elite" already being next to NYC, I think I can handle them.

Figured that the summers would be spent indoors during the day, I have lots of family in Phoenix and that what they end up doing. Looking to rent at first but if I do buy I doubt its worse than what we would pay in NJ. A normal 3/2 2k ft2 + 0.25ac lot would be approx 10k+/year in taxes where I live now.

Where is your work located? If downtown, expect a long commute (40 min) if you want to live in any of the decent suburbs. Even the more undesirable suburbs (srs, undesirable) are a minimum 25-30 min commute. With that said, places in the "loop" are substantially more expensive (east coast style) than the suburbs, but the commute isn't bad. If you live in the loop, live only in the west side of the loop. The loop is actually pretty nice. If you are fine with suburb and want to minimize commute downtown, look into "Fall Creek" - probably the closest suburb that is livable to downtown (still kind of undesirable, but the community itself is nice).

If you like outdoors, Houston is pretty gross. Flat and swampy. If you like playing in lakes, any lakes in the Houston area will have alligators and snakes. Austin is nice though and only 3 hours away.

Summers are over-hyped. They are not that bad srs. The rainy season sucks though. And there tend to be more power outtages than in other places I have lived. And hurricanes, you'll need to keep an eye out for those.

All good to know! I am not 100% sure where this would be located, id assume somewhere near heavy industry. The work I am involved in deals with lots of industrial gasses and raw materials.

Once you find out, PM me if you want. More than willing to lend a hand or give some thoughts.

You also don't have to live in the burbs, there's a lot of nice areas but they are pricier. If you're renting it's more reasonable though. In Montrose area, I know you can for sure get at least a 2-3 bed house 5 minutes from downtown for $1,200 to $1,700. And about 5 min from the bayou and hike and bike trail (nice nature areas here). 10 minutes from Memorial park, the arboretum, and the glades (nice nature trails and jogging, pond, etc.).

Other poster is correct about alligators and snakes, lol. General rule is flip flops on the beach and boots or at least shoes and pants in the woods. Btw even the grassy areas by the sand at the beach are rattlesnake heaven, lmao

Heavy industry could be anywhere around here, but most likely outside of the loop (beltway 8) or close to the HSC (ship channel).

Summers are hot, water is wet, man lands on moon. Just stay in the shade and enjoy the cool mornings and evenings. Spring is really nice here and fall can be but is usually hot. We've spent many thanksgivings and christmases with 80F weather, dedfknsrs.

General advice is commute sucks dik so live close to work if possible. Will your wife work? Kids in daycare or school?

Thanks for the advice, will hit you up when I know more. No kids. Wife works in the hotel industry and would look for the same line of work there, however we are not dependant on her working, its just to bolster retirement savings. I live in a very busy area now and my motto was always live near work, I am 15 minutes away now and its ideal for me. Ive been looking at places to rent, it seems that I have options given my budget.

All these *******s coming here, buying up our housing causing housing prices to skyrocket and adding more traffic. Now we have energy problems in the summer cause of these *******s.

We’re full and Houston is 100 deg w/ 100% humidity AT ALL TIMES. Good luck with stop and go traffic on Sunday afternoons too, imagine during working hours? lmao

Agree w/ bolded. Fall and winter are really really nice in Houston. There are like 5 days (not necessarily consecutive, just based on if a cold front comes through) where you might be tempted to wear a jacket, but most of the time it is not necessary.

With that said, and I am speaking objectively, Houston is not necessarily a desirable place to live (unless you are comparing it to some other non-FL place in the south). It is a place that ppl live because it has really really good jobs / economy and ppl can hold their nose in order to collect a nice paycheck. Not throwing shade on Houston, just trying to be transparent.

Houston is the biggest city in Texas. It's mostly because it is a hub for international trade and petroleum as a coastal city.

If you're from NJ I will say it's hot as hell and there are not four seasons. The seasons are hot, very hot, and Texas cold. Texas cold is like your Spring up North.

It also has the top universities and of course the international corporations. There are also big rodeos and football games as well as good food. Zoning is crazy and traffic is a bitch, my brother is from Houston.

Just don't drive up the damn rent, and make an effort to connect with the community. Figure you wouldn't have a hard time adjusting to a big Southern city coming from NJ. Y'all are alright, generally tough and hard working people it seems from NJ. Biggest shock for you would be the heat.

Houston is pretty diverse lol - don't think there will be any issues adjusting unless OP moves to a trailer park.

Which part of heavy industry are you in, the blue collar or white collar side? Is your building an all indoor building or attached to a yard/warehouses for/plants? Food is awesome here. Weather is weather, I've lived here all my life, except for a few college yrs. Summers hot and humid, winter is a few days, fall is really nice when a cool front comes in and drops the temp to the upper 80's for a high and upper 60's for a low. Rain sucks and flooding can be hell. People do not know how to drive in the rain here. Just a little tip. The general area of Houston and it's burbs are pretty big. It is possible to spend 2 hrs driving from one end to the other and not get out of the city. Texas is also big in general. Head east on I-10 and you'll be in Louisiana in 2 hrs. Head west on I-10 and in 12 hrs, you'll still be in Texas.

Bolded is an understated benefit of Houston. For all the chit Houston gets, you can get over to Austin/DFW really quickly, or over to New Orleans in like 5 hrs, or to some pretty sick gulf coast beaches in like 7-8 hours. Also, Galveston can be really nice if you manage your expectations lol

So damn true about Galveston. Is it a beach, yes. Is it a beach you'll want to send pics to your friends and family of.....not really.

Also OP, the east side is the more industrial side things. Ship channel, chemical plants etc.

It's possible the company could be relocating to the Woodlands, if so, OP you're good to go. It's the nicest burbs for sure.

The Woodlands is about a 45 min drive from downtown. 1 hr easy with traffic and longer during rush hour.

If they are in the in the northern half traffic doesn't seem that bad, otherwise traffic seems like it will be 1.5-2 hours
I have no idea where the engineering companies are located unfortunately. Downtown has typical banks/pe firms / law firms / big energy companies / big F100 companies, but other energy companies and big companies are spread out across the whole city. I think Exxon, for example, is in woodlands. Schlumberger / Haliburton are in random suburban areas, etc.

S&B Engineering is on the South Side. There is also the energy corridor located on the west side of the metropolitan area between Beltway 8 and the Grand Parkway. Businesses are all over the place. I do know the Bently and Bugatti dealership is in between San Felipe and Post Oak Blvd on 610 west loop. lol

Houston miscers are good people from my experience. NJ is my area, and it’s another world from Texas (though I only visited Dallas). That said, NJ is one of the most sharply divided areas in the US imo. South/central Jersey are nothing like the areas close to NYC, and the Rutgers area is nothing like more western/southern parts. The cities are another thing altogether. I imagine that Texas has it’s areas as well. On the misc, I keep hearing “stay out of Austin”. Who knows though, experience it yourself. Plenty of Seattle, Portland and LA miscers seem to be alright.

It is what you make of it. There's beautiful nature all around you just have to look for it. The city itself is not too nice. As you'd expect the historical places are the nicest, where all the houses look old school and are built like they were in the 1920s and stuff (Heights). Woodlands is pretty nice and the land all around here is generally really quite nice in my opinion, but the concrete jungle areas and poor areas are very ugly, true. Then there's the sea of suburban hell. All of the suburbs generally have a very small historic area with (sometimes) nice old houses. I'm thinking of Spring, Pearland, Katy, maybe a few more. The rest is monotonous. Around the bayous, which flood so stay safe, it's quite hilly and lush. We found that nothing around our area floods because we're 50' higher than the bayou, so even the houses closest to the bayou didn't flood. Obviously not all will be like that.

Only place that fits that criteria is The Woodlands but is far.
Inner loop you'll find that. Montrose, 6th Ward, 2nd Ward, Washington, Greenway, maybe Midtown, Rice Military, EaDo, Oak Forest/Timbergrove, maybe some Heights. Plenty of others but those are pretty nice, safe places with walkable and desirable things around. 600k is a lot even in the city here. 700k gets you 3,300 sq ft in my hood.

The sad thing about some of the historical places is you'll have an original 1920's style house and some idiot bought the lot or 2 next to it and tore it down to put up a McMansion. I was over in The Heights a few weeks ago, at a Farmer's Market, and was surprised at some of the houses that were 1 million and up. Nothing special but nice houses for the area. There's a lot of money in Houston.
