Life on Earth began 4.5 Billion years ago



If you exist today your family tree extends back 4.5 Billion years.

How many generations is that? How many organisms successfully reproduced so you could exist today? If divide by 50 (years) it's 90 million generations, but it's a lot more than that because the average time between births was much shorter than that for most of those 4.5 Billion years.

When does that line, which began 4.5 Billion years ago, end?

Dinosaurs roamed for 160 million years, modern day humans have been around 200,000.


Watched some simulations of what the dinosaurs would have seen in the sky the month leading up to the asteroid impact. Pretty fckn eerie. Feel bad for the. But if that didn't happen then I wouldn't be here so yolo

This 90 million generation number is way too small, by orders of magnitude. Hell 90 million generations ago probably puts us at some kind mammal or reptile (probably mammal), which is trivially long ago in the whole picture of life on earth. When you consider simpler life before the cambrian explosion, particularly prokaryotes billions of years ago (which can multiply quite rapidly), there were many hundreds of billions or a trillion+ generations before you. No way to calculate this number with any certainty bc of unknowns.

Wish I could have seen what earth looked like when it had its highest O2 content and biomass. The amount of life it has now is abysmal and boring compared to back then when all the giant dinos roamed.

Definitely more than like 3.5 billion years ago. Probably not 4.5, but the date for the origin of life on earth keeps getting pushed back more and more, to very possibly over 4 billion years ago now.

The closer that date gets pushed back to the origin of earth, the less rare and impossible-like odds are of life arising (abiogenesis) on a planet with suitable conditions, assuming life on earth did originate on earth. If life arose right after the origin of the earth, this points to it being commonplace for it to come into being, compared to if it arose a billion years after. All signs are starting to point to it arose pretty soon after earth's formation.
