There's definitely such a thing as over training and I've experienced it once or twice in my life.

Under eating and more than likely lack of sleep.
I used to think I was overtraining when my muscles would start to cramp at the end of my workouts, found out I was drinking too much water, pissing a lot and sweating a lot. Began incorporating 1.5g of iodized salt mid training, cramps gone.

most people probably do both
but eating is in no way, shape, or form a trade off for recovery.
Recovery takes X amount of hours, period, no amount of food is going to lessen the amount of recovery a muscle needs, but under eating can make it take LONGER to recover.
but there is most definitely 1000000% over training.
Actually the biggest mistake is people train like pussies. If you train with true intensity and go to true failure you NEED 2-3 rest days a week, if you can lift everyday of the week and still make progress, you are likely lifting like a pussy.

It’s mostly about progression
You can’t go 0 to 100 and expect to perform.
But if you’ve been lifting out regularly 4-5 days a week and think going 6-7 days a week is going to overtraining it’s not likely.
Then once you become accustomed to 6-7 days, you could probably go 10 days between rest days etc.
Rest days are overrated if you’re regularly lifting. Assuming you’re consistent and have built that foundation you can push the days off further and further apart

"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."
