Pulled Hamstring Misc Doctors help

Was doing sprints on my lunch at work and on my third one mid sprint I felt a pop and sudden sharp pain on my left hammy, Went to urgent care and it was a grade 1 pull so nothing serious but I've never endured a pulled muscle and especially one as stubborn as a hamstring

Any home remedies that you guys did to help? Doctors just said to ice and rest so I paid my copay for them to tell me to do nothing for a week lmao pls help

Yeah, I did the same when I bought a basketball a couple of months ago to shoot around and I haven’t touched one in years. Ended up spraining my knee from jumping around like a tool after 40 minutes. Took a month to get better.

Good luck.

bro... how was the pain? Even with a grade 1 pull (or so they say) the pain was/is pretty intense, I drive a manual car so just shifting was very unpleasant, I would have sudden sharp pains while walking damn near stopping me in my tracks.

its gonna hurt for the first couple or few days. just rest it. dont massage and dont stretch or youll risk aggravating the tear.

in a week start to massage and stretch a few times a week. roll a ball under the hammy in the direction of the striations. this is important to try and unfuk all the new crooked random scar tissue that will limit your hammys ROM.

you can start doing strengthening exercises a couple times a week. lay on your back and put a bosu ball under your heel and roll it back towards your glutes. sit on a rolling chair and walk yourself forward for some distance. stand parallel to a wall and hold on to a doorknob or counter and wear a sock so you can lunge your leg forward and slide it back under you while you hold something. after a couple weeks start light jogging to get it used to larger loads and rebuild mechanics. keep stretching and massaging. youll forever need to attend to that garbled scar tissue or your ROM will suffer.

after 3-4 weeks you can probably start higher pace jogs and ham curls. 5-6 weeks start strides but not full sprints and then just work to build strength in glutes and hams to prevent having weaknesses and overcompensating which is what usually causes ham pulls. i do nordic ham curls regularly, the eccentric contractions have been shown to really help prevent ham pulls.

Hamstring strains suck.

Ice, ibuprofen, plenty of water and rest.

Unfortunately there is no “magic bullet” here, just takes time.

As someone who has torn theirs multiple times playing sports and lifting, theres no magical thing IMO. Ibuprofen for the swelling and pain(somewhat helped), I did lots of different stretches with bands, rode bikes forward and back daily, wall squats using a ball, assisted lunges... things like that. Good luck man.

Ooof, you fukking idiot you probably didn't stretch enough.

I had a grade 2 hamstring pull about a year and a half ago, did it playing flag football. This was the worst one I've ever had, because I actually felt it like pop and pull. You have to do RICE. So Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. I had to drive home for 2 hours after the fact and I had to legit balance on one cheek because it hurt so bad. I rested it for like 2 weeks, then did some heating and light stretching, kept moving around to allow blood to flow. Maybe took 4-6 weeks to really be able to put substantial weight on it. Then it took another 2-3 weeks of a little more light exercise to get back into it. Then about 3 months after the whole ordeal I was back in the gym building it back up. Mine was a little worse than yours so it took a little longer, but they are pretty much the same. You really just have to trust yourself as to how good it feels. If it hurts "good" then keep going, if it hurts "bad" then stop. Sometimes you have those painful stretches but they feel nice. But if you fuk it up you'll make it worse. You don't want to overexert yourself and make it worse.

In order to alleviate some of those twings and twangs, you should really just buy one of those chitty bandage wraps from CVS and just keep it wrapped whenever you are moving. It helps get rid of some of those random pulling pains.

GL brah, I know it sucks. The thing with hamstrings too is that once you get one, you might be susceptible to getting more, so its important to train correctly and make sure you always stretch properly.

I did stretch a good amount and did jogging before hand with some suicides to get my legs loose I guess it just wasnt enough. I was on my 3rd sprint and I hit that 2nd gear and felt a pop and instant pain. Damn near collapsed, Tomorrow will be a week since this happened the pain is "tolerable" but it flares up and catches me off guard. I'm gonna go buy the KT tape on my lunch with some Penetrex to help. I just dont want to miss more work time for this I missed 3 days of work last week. I was planning to try to go to the gym for some stretching nothing heavy but idk feels too soon now

yeah I figured theres no "easy" cure here but I was curious what others have done to help me ease back into the swing of it. I have honestly never hurt myself like this so it truly sucks makes you lose confidence in my abilities I guess, but god if mine felt like hell I can only imagine what a tear feels like... absolute agony I am guessing

I appreciate the detailed response, tomorrow the injury would be 1 week and its been not fun to say the least mostly just resting and ice, I'm gonna get some tape to help me work around it easier because its unbearable to try and do this for 8 hours right now. I truly hope this does not happen again this is a real eye opener that I'm not 18. I did stretch a fair amount and warmed up but just was not enough.

Hammys are sorta a bitch to get over. Always nagging even when u feel like it's good. You'll need to stay off sprints or anything posterior work for a while

its gonna hurt for the first couple or few days. just rest it. dont massage and dont stretch or youll risk aggravating the tear.

in a week start to massage and stretch a few times a week. roll a ball under the hammy in the direction of the striations. this is important to try and unfuk all the new crooked random scar tissue that will limit your hammys ROM.

you can start doing strengthening exercises a couple times a week. lay on your back and put a bosu ball under your heel and roll it back towards your glutes. sit on a rolling chair and walk yourself forward for some distance. stand parallel to a wall and hold on to a doorknob or counter and wear a sock so you can lunge your leg forward and slide it back under you while you hold something. after a couple weeks start light jogging to get it used to larger loads and rebuild mechanics. keep stretching and massaging. youll forever need to attend to that garbled scar tissue or your ROM will suffer.

after 3-4 weeks you can probably start higher pace jogs and ham curls. 5-6 weeks start strides but not full sprints and then just work to build strength in glutes and hams to prevent having weaknesses and overcompensating which is what usually causes ham pulls. i do nordic ham curls regularly, the eccentric contractions have been shown to really help prevent ham pulls.

Unfortunately there is no “magic bullet” here, just takes time.

Good luck man.

aside from rest, and taking OTC meds...once you feel you can stretch i highly recommend doing light work like leg curls with 10-20lbs on a machine. do body weight squats using a chair. I recommend squat university.

went to urgent care for a pulled hamstring. das it mane.

hamstring is a weird muscle. sit around on your ass, it will take forever to heal and get super tight. do too much, you don't give it time to heal.
be the turtle in the race.

You need a physical therapist. They’ll set you straight.

But high level - you need to let it rest but after that’s over you need to get it moving again starting with ROM and then strengthening everything around it, then strengthening the hammy itself. Seriously go to a PT. Do it right. This is your health

I had too I was technically still "working" when I pulled it so bosses needed to see some form of report on paper, they knew I wasn't lying but sadly its protocol. Yeah I'm learning real quick its a muscle that is not too be messed with. Doubled up my protein intake too hopefully help my body aide in recovery. I feel like I'm doing okay I do sit around a lot but I was making it a point to walk around the house to keep the muscle loose and icing and heat pads to help. But yeah a very touchy feely muscle that can love or hate you

I might take that advice my insurance would cover it easily like 95% of the cost I believe. I want to come back strong and not risk making it worse.

I do appreciate all the advice and helpful comments being that this is my first real injury in my life (no broken bones ty god) the feeling of uncertainty and doubt was definitely lingering while I was home resting
