Depends on the company.

If you work in software, Joel Spolsky once said "Never work for a company whose main product isn't software."

I think it extends into all of IT in a way.

If a company doesn't embrace technology, and clings to outdated and out-of-touch MBAs driving the business, then yes, absolutely, you'll find yourself the tradie of the white collar world. Managers/leaders will often ask the impossible or ask you to clean up messes they made. Not a great place to be.

Based on how hard I laft at title I'd have to say yes.

OK, a couple of things to unpack in these responses below, as a software developer.This has truth but there is a clear separation of concern when it comes to different IT stuff.

If we are talking about hardware maintenance, networks admins then that is really the coal face of IT.

If we are talking about Data Science, Software Engineering that all use some sort of ML (which is DS anyway), it is completely different.


To give a complementary example in the world of finance you can be a top tier investment banker, trader or asset manager or you can be internal audit bean-counting in Big 4 Auditors or the back office of a Fortune 500.Now to add to this. You said HR, which is a support function but the tradie analogy simply doesn't work as it is the procurement of people. However, Marketing (especially when it is in the same division as Sales and co-joined) has a massive impact on sales.

In fact, Sales/Bizzdev + Marketing can be thought of as the revenue generator of any company. How can it be thought of as a trade when literally it drives the business? They would be laid off last...

Even in big tech companies, where software engineers are making the products, pieces of software doesn't mean dick until you get clients.

A lot of senior investment bankers and traders have a huge portion of their day taken up by selling to individual/institutional clients.


Even stuff like Corporate Finance = very important to understand the financial health of a company in terms of decision making but it is not really responsible for more business unless it is an in-house mergers and acquisitions team (corporate dev).

Businesses can't run without money but that argument can extend to businesses can't run without people, which would make HR the same importance.

why dont you play a game and go tell a chick youre an electrician and see the reaction. or don't even specify your job and just say you're in construction. i guarantee you its not the reaction you expect. i lol @ you thinking this would sway interest. or else youre talking about massive gold diggers and even then it's prob less than you think. i work in multi million dollar condos (as a tradie) and the interest is still the same
