This exact thing happened to my dad, except he was also facing heavy debts and alimony/child-support. He never financially recovered, but got to a happy state of things finally after like 40 years, srs.
TBH what I'd probably end up doing is working some minimum wage jobs, maybe even try to determine the best state to live in from a CoL versus minimum wage perspective... get into a college-style roommate situation where I pay like $500/mo for my share of rent + bills... and try my hardest to play with single stocks as able until I financially succeed, never going into debt, never leveraging margin.

I've always wanted to try my hand at law school, but that's gonna be hard with $0 in the bank.
I'd probably work retail for dummy COVID wages while applying for quant/finance jobs at night. Can't take my education away from me and business brahs will take a flier on a dude with a masters in electrical engineering.

Honestly, I would probably find a way to do some type of consulting or similar work remotely and move somewhere like Tulum, Mexico. I don't dislike what I do- but I do not like a lot of the people I interact with. It's also a fair amount of tedious work.
