Could the United States defend itself in this scenario?

Let's say an alien race decided for their own reasons, that the U.S. had to be completely annihilated, and they were prepared to blow us off the fuking map completely

Would we even be able to do anything about that? Or would it be futile? How strong actually is the U.S. military?

Well consider America can’t defend itself from terrorism and gun crime I hardly imagine it do to well against extra terrestrials that have mastered space travel

considering by "alien" you mean otherPLANETARYlifeforms..and the fact that we (earth) don't have planetary travel yet.. if they're here then they'd prolly blow the entire planet off the map

With the amount of spending for military purposes here, I wouldn't be surprised to find one day that there exists weaponry that could take out an entire planet. It's all just a guess, but it's possible we're already there now. Who knows if we could fight back and possibly defend ourselves

If we use our own logic and methods, to begin with. Why wouldn't they use subversion tactics first?

You know to go into a nation change the upper tier of power with your own people (or Aliens) and then push further in gaining complete control over every part of that country.

It all depends on the level of tech of the enemy and how capable of they are.

If a fleet of Tyranids started touching down all over America and wreaking havoc, the place would be gone within a few days or maybe a week depending on exact numbers of aliens. It would only be a matter of time.

Nuclear weapons are pretty powerful. I'd say we'd have a reasonable shot. But any aliens that could visit us would be really far beyond us technologically. That doesn't mean they could withstand nukes though.
