If I were earning 40K a year, I would live with my parents if possible. Otherwise it all goes to rent, food, utilities etc.

Yeah,, its a little embarrassing, but probably not as bad as having 0 in savings.

Depends on where you live really. Right now I live downtown in one of the most expensive cities in the US.

Back when I lived in a small town in the Southeast, 40k would be a very comfortable life with plenty to save.

Be honest though, would you still be drinking and smoking anyways even if you had billions?
