I carry three different "devices" depending on what I'm doing. Around the house and every day basic use, I carry a basic folding blade. Low to medium quality. Easy to sharpen and don't feel bad beating on a little. Don't like to have a fine edge on this one. It needs to last, so I sharpen to no more than 45 degrees. My current one is a cool little blade I got from the NRA.



My defense/tactical knife is a cool find from several years ago. It's an Emerson design Spyderco folder. It has a thumb hold for opening for opening one handed and a wave design that opens the blade as you remove it from your pocket. It takes practice to use but it's very effective. It's designed for quick, single handed opening. I don't carry this often, as I carry a firearm, but it's a nice back up when carrying the firearm is impossible (very rarely, as I conceal carry pretty much everywhere)



When working on my farm, I carry the legendary multitool as well.

I was under the impression that in the US it was more legal to carry a gun then a knife, unless you're in Portland, where all the knife companies are

I have a few Micro's and a Benchmade Infidel, the quality on Microtech is ages ahead of Benchmade. Ultratech's are a great first OTF.

I carry this everywhere I go. It is thin, light and inexpensive. The blade is just over 3 inches so probably a bit smaller than what you are looking for.

I have looked into assisted openers for EDC but havent found one I like. The SOG Ageis came close, but it felt cheap in my hand and had too much play in the blade

Don’t get an auto, while legal here with foid very illegal many other places. I really like the zero tolerance 452cf. It’s great steel and lightweight, 4.1” blade. I have been carrying another ZT a lot lately can’t remember the model it’s heavy. Just got back from Pigeon Forge, had to stop at Smokey Mountain Knife Works - could have spent the week wandering around in there.

I try to stay with US made semi customs for nice EDC knives. I have an extensive knife collection.

Anything made by Zero Tolerance. They exclusively use s30v steel which is hard as fuk. Little bit of a pain to sharpen but it stays sharp far longer than anything other than 01 tool steel. Ive been carrying a ZT 0700 for years. Also have a 4” ZT fixed blade that is a fukkin beast. All that benchmade and emerson big money chit is just flash imo.

My “church blade” is a spyderco police. Which only gets pulled out to clean or to dig at my fingernails. Only other thing its rly good for is self defense.

Benchmade Bugout. Light and thin favorite to wear around town

Spyderco shaman. Big beefy folder for going camping or fishing.

Spyderco and Benchmade make these in fancy steel if you want to spend.

I have never owned a Spyderco. They still make alot of their knives in America which is important to me (I don't trust chinese quality control). But something about the blade shape/thumb hole puts me off.

Interesting enough I have a Spyderco sage 5 lightweight made in Taiwan and I think that specific factory has better quality control than their USA made. Agree on china factory though.

My favorite knife was a Spyderco. I think it had just the right amount of quick opening without being illegal in places that ban assist and auto opening. When I got used to the hole, I preferred it over a thumb stud.

I believe they use different steel in their more expensive knives and unfortunately I had a cheaper model that was hard to keep sharp, and the tip eventually broke. Spyderco used to have a knife sharpening mail-in service, if I remember correctly, which could be another reason to look at the brand.

Nowadays I tend to carry utility knife folders where I can just swap out the blade when it gets dull. Gerber has some nice ones, but the blade changes are easier on some generic Amazon ones I got.

My Sage and Bradley folders made in Taichung/Taiwan are some of the best knives in my collection. Just killer for the price too. I never really like the blade shape as well but it grows on you.

My daily carry is a Gerber spring open. It's just alright but all I'm doing is cutting boxes etc so it's fine for my needs and I don't feel bad abusing it.
