Anyone else noticing a tiny/modular homes movement. [Counterculture tings]
Last few years I’m noticing the movement is growing
Maybe cause youtube favours that algorithm and schills the fuk outta it on their platform
But I’m seeing more modular(basically a modern trailer) homes as well as tiny homes IRL as well now
1000sqft modular homes made in 2021 are going for anywhere from $150k-$200k not sure how big their market is but somehow are able to grow their business and still charge that much.
Even Elon is jumping on the band wagon
From a pragmatic POV it makes sense if you want a no bull chit way to save money and stay outta debt.
Not saying going the traditional route is better or worse. It’s just more conventional. Going the other way you’ll have to do things less by the book and often find yourself in challenging unconventional problems.
But I think if you can make it work it will be well worth it. I’ve called many different municipalities in alberta and many of them have no minimum size requirements for building codes for residential homes.

People have been living in small cabins and trailers for the last 100 years. They've been regarded as hillbillies and rednecks but I guess now we can say they are just trendsetters.

Honestly I'd be happy with a tiny cabin in the woods or plenty of acreage in general. I don't want a big house, and I'd rather build it myself and use good quality products to build it right and make it last.

theres a little winery/vineyard town where people vacation for a day or two outside Austin and I remember always getting Airbnb's there because thats the popular thing but now its like $500 a night for an "okay" airbnb there and theres 100s of RV's, container "houses, and "yurts" and literal ****ing tents for $100 a night just go visit this town and go to the winerys.
taking my fiance there for her birthday and best i could find was a small single room in an inn with a jacuzzi and balcony for $300 a night
If I wanted an actual 1-2 bedroom cottage with a hot tub and cable/tv/internet its like legit $1k a night on weekends.

Some of it is dumb/too small/impractical.
And zoning can be a real problem.
But if you can build/buy something of decent quality that is big *enough* AND you don't have to finance it AND you can either park it somewhere with low taxes, or in a spot where it is considered a vehicle for tax purposes/not attached to the land THEN you can save quite a bit of money vs. other options.
If you are renting you will be subject to rent increases, variable neighbors, and management that may be good or bad.
If you have a regular property you are up against taxes/insurance and a mortgage too for most people. Also higher utilities and more maintenance for a larger property and may have to deal with an HOA.
And zoning can be a real problem.

You can farm bugs and grill lab-made meat right outside!
I LMFAO @ tiny home people. 90% cope. These are the same people who would be disgusted by a regular trailer home, but a $40-60k version is alright lmao. If you listen to why they are doing/making one, its to save up and buy a REAL HOME 90% of the time.
The other, acceptable reasons:
1. actually change locations for work constantly (why not get a bus/RV/camper/etc instead of hauling this around with your pickup?)
2. To put on some remote vacation property
3. Live outside in some high cost chit hole like SF....but your commute is gonna be so fukin chitty to live far away enough where you can hook it up and dont have to worry about homeless and lowlifes breaking into your box that is 50% windows.

Actually looked into this about a year ago. All the builders of mod homes come in nearly the same as stick built homes. When you add in the finishing, I found it doesn't save anything. Couple that with the retail value of a lesser known market, trying to pull permits anywhere but very rural areas, and it was enough to say 'no'.

As a man with no kids I'd love a smaller place. Military I lived out of a foot locker. The only thing is if you want a nice small house in a nice area, it's nearly impossible.

I own a piece of property in NY and they won't allow it, has to be a legit permanent structure. Sitting on concrete isn't allowed, I was gonna get a modular trailer brought in to rent out but they shot it down

Also not sure what OP is on about 1000 sqft structures. The purpose of these structures is to be minimalistic in nature. That's why 375 sqft makes sense.
