Official Misc Firearms Crew Pistol Qual Thread

So you've been shooting for a while, working on the fundamentals. Or, maybe you just hit the range once a month and blast away a couple hundred rounds. In either case, you might be wondering, "how well am I prepared to fight with a pistol?" "Am I just a gun****, or do I have what it takes to be an MFC qualified gunfighter?" Ask no more...

We all have things that we can work on, obviously. Qualifications are often used by military and law enforcement organizations to determine a baseline level of proficiency for candidates. They range from very easy (military pistol qualifications) to extremely difficult (the old Federal Air Marshal qualification was so hard that hardly anyone could pass it). As such, they serve a function as excellent baseline skills assessments, and are helpful for identifying things you need to work on.

The Misc Firearms Crew (pistol) gunfighter qualification is less of a pure marksmanship qualification (as many military quals tend to be with their extremely generous par times), but rather it's designed to test your ability to land accurate hits with a pistol at ranges from 7 to 25 yards quickly under pressure. It is designed to be shot from concealment, as you actually carry your firearm. The target isn't very small, but the par times are tight meaning that you'll need to draw fast and handle your gun well in order to "pass."

The whole thing is based on the honor system, don't feel obligated to upload a video or anything, but props if you do. Feel free to shoot it multiple times, but do not shoot it more than once in a session as it's intended to be shot cold at the beginning of your session.

You will need...

Spoiler!

Your daily carry gear [pistol, 3 magazines, holster]
* Note, the pistol must hold at least 10 rounds in the magazine
Optional: single or double mag pouch, otherwise reloads are done from a pocket.
Shot timer
30 rounds of ammunition
IDPA or IPSC Silhouette
Optional: NRA B8 or Shoot N See sticker for an aiming reference point

Preparation

Spoiler!

Load three magazines with 10 rounds each.

Instructions

Spoiler!

All stages will be shotdrawing from concealmentexcept stages 3 and 5, which start at low ready.

The course of fire should be shot cold.

Modifier for people who can't draw from concealment

Spoiler!

Really you should find a range that allows you to do this, but recognizing the fact that some parts of the country make concealed carry impossible and so local ranges are less apt to permit drawing from concealment. There is a 2 second par modifier for anyone who can't draw from concealment. This is based on most *OK* shooters taking around two seconds to draw and fire cold, and trying to balance against the fact that your grip is going to be better from low ready than from the draw.

**Suggestion from Bo, as an alternative modifier for two-handed stages, start one-handed at low ready, with your non-firing hand on your head. At the beep, bring your hands together to simulate an imperfect grip. Add 1.5s par modifier if using this technique.

Scoring

Spoiler!

Failing to meet par time on any stage = failure.

Alpha hits are worth 10 points, bravo [head outside the eye box, extending up from the A zone] hits are worth 8. Charlies are worth 6, and Deltas are worth 4.

The maximum score is 300 points. The scoring tiers are as follows:
<260: Gun****
260-270: MFC Qualified Gunfighter
271-280: MFC Pistolero
281-290: MFC Desperado
291-300: MFC John Wick

Note, shots are measured by the highest scoring zone that the shot breaks. Example: shots on the C line, that break the A line, would be scored as A hits.

Stages

Spoiler!

Stage 1. 7 Yards: 8 seconds

6 rounds one-handed strong hand.

Stage 2. 7 Yards: 4 seconds

Mozambique drill [2 rounds to the chest, 1 to the head].

Stage 3. 7 Yards: 4 seconds from low ready

Fire 1 round, reload, fire 1 round

Stage 4. 7 Yards: 4 seconds

Bill drill [6 rounds]

Stage 5. 15 Yards: 6 seconds from low ready

Fire 3 rounds, reload, fire 1 round

Stage 6, 7. 25 Yards: 5 seconds

Fire 2 rounds. Repeat twice.

Stage 8. 7 Yards: 5 seconds.

Mozambique drill [2 rounds to the chest, 1 to the head], strong hand only.

Stage 9, 10. 7 Yards: 2.5 seconds

Fire 1 round to the head. Repeat twice.

Good luck. So far I've shot it, as have criminal_manne and JChippy, sure they'll chime in here shortly.

I’ll post my target from the firearm thread. I shoot fairly often but not a masterclass handgun shooter by any means. Failed my first attempt.

Good course of fire for anyone looking to challenge themselves and evaluate what they need to improve on vs just going to the range and blasting away aimlessly.

in.

it's a good go for only 30 rounds of ammo, and you can download a free shot timer app, "splits" that works pretty good once you figure out the settings

Shot this today with my Cajun Gunworks CZ P01. This is still my primary carry gun until I get my micro compact situation figured out, but in any event...it shoots like a racegun. I'll be honest, I definitely found it harder to shoot the 25 yard stages with irons, than with my G19. I'm a little bit out of practice since I've been practicing with the RMR, but I have the most kinesthetic time with this pistol so my draw and reload are both fast.

All in all this is a 274 with [s]one miss (the one left of the A box broke the line, the one at bottom left of the A box did not)[/s] actually no misses, I'm just an idiot who can't add lol.

Oh, where to begin…

Okay, story time. I wanted to take two of my neighbors that I consider typical concealed carry people to shoot the gunfighter qual. Both have CCLs (even tho we’re in a constitutional carry state) and both usually have a firearm on them when they leave the house. So both have made the commitment to be an armed citizen, and I was curious how the average person who carries a gun daily would fare.

Neighbor #1:

This is a guy who doesn’t talk much about guns for self defense. He mostly likes to talk about accuracy and quality firearms. He seems to choose his carry guns based on convenience and concealability considerations, so he carries a small Smith .38 revolver most of the time, but also carries a Dan Wesson Valor when wearing heavier clothing. He chose the Valor to shoot the qual.

This guy could never break through his need for marksmanship. He missed ALL of his times, some by a lot. He also had difficulties on the mag exchange stages.

His target looked good at the end of the day, but in reality, it is more of a bullseye example than a defensive shooting fundamentals result.

Neighbor #2:

This is a guy who talks about self defense A LOT. He usually has a story about how he had a conflict that could have gone bad, or how he thought he might have to use his weapon. You know… that guy.

He used to carry a Smith Bodyguard in .380, but couldn’t hit shyt with it. About a year ago, he traded it for a Kimber Pro Carry II, and has it on him whenever he is wearing pants. He loves to talk guns and shoot, but he rarely practices self defense fundamentals.

Putting this guy on the timer and under a little pressure really screwed with his head. On stages #1 and #8, he forgot to go strong hand only, and habitually went to a two handed grip. Fail. He blew both stages with magazine changes in a big way. And while doing his best to make times, he only made it on stages 6, 7, 9, and 10. He missed the entire target page on 4 separate shots.

So there you have it. A very small sampling of a couple of average dudes who carry. Not sure what they will do with the slap in the face their results gave them.

Cliffs: The average person who EDCs is not nearly as good as they think they are.

These are the results of shooting the MFC Gunfighter Qual with neighbor #1.

Here’s my rundown and impressions:

Shot it cold with my carry pistol from the appendix position. Not my normal carry position, but it was the only way to draw from concealment at this range and not be told to stop. Appendix is definitely an easier and slightly faster draw than my normal 4:30 position.

Stage 1: 6.79 sec, 6 A zone hits

Stage 2: 3.48 sec, 2 A zone, and 1 B zone hit that barely cut the line.

Stage 3: 3.90 sec, 2 A zone hits. Mag exchange went well.

Stage 4: 3.09 sec, 6 A zone hits.

At this point I’m feeling damn good about the thing, and jinxed myself because the wheels fell off of stage 5.

Stage 5: 6.71 sec (blew the time here with a shytty push to the target, and a bad mag exchange) 2 B zone hits, and 2 C zone hits. All high misses, so I set myself up for a consistent mistake right off the poor draw.

Stage 6: 3:08 sec, 2 A zone hits

Stage 7: 2.56 sec, 2 A zone hits

Stage 8: 2.74 sec, 3 A zone hits

Stage 9: 1.71 sec, 1 A zone hit

Stage 10: 1.48 sec, 1 B zone hit

My overall impression of my performance was disappointing. Blowing the time on stage 5 takes me out of a possible 284 and drops me to gun**** territory.

I’ll go shoot it again with another buddy tomorrow. Maybe I won’t fck it up.

Here’s how I did when I shot with neighbor #2.

Knowing where I screwed up and missed my time on stage #5 on the first try, I fixed that error and made time on all 10 stages. Stage #5 was still difficult to complete successfully, though. Shot #4 had to be slung in very fast and is the bullet hole to the right testicle.

I brain farted on the very last stage and put the head shot about a half inch above the target.

I also note that when I shoot very quickly, I tend to hit slightly left of zero.

That's some excellent shooting man.

Hit the "range" today with my new carry piece - Sig 365X. Carrying appendix style definitely helps me draw faster. I have exactly 1 dry fire session, and 1 live fire session under my belt with this thing, but figured why not give the MFC qual a try?

As it turns out, hitting par times was actually pretty easy drawing from up front. I was a little bit concerned about the reload stages because I have some pretty big paws that overhang the grip quite a ways, but with a pinch grip it wasn't too bad to do the reloads well under par. That said, shooting a micro compact carry pistol at 25 yards is um...difficult to say the least. That said, I am not sweating it too much considering it's my second time out with this piece. Afterwards I did test my zero and confirmed it needed a couple clicks left, as the target would show.

A 250 puts me solidly in gun**** territory when shooting a micro compact but with some more dry fire and live sessions I think this setup will be a winner.
