You think I'll lose that much mass if I quit lifting legs? My legs always hurt.

I'm over 35, and have been squating over 300 lbs for like 17 years now. My thighs always choke my balls and chaffe them.. my legs always fall asleep, knee pain.... I got to thinking... Why am I still lifting legs? I still plan on running / biking / skiing / working my legs out as per normal activities....

But serious question. I'm about 6 foot, 218lbs... Do you seriously thnk I'll lose that much mass quitting leg day? I'm old. I don't really care anymore. (I'm guessing my T levels will drop somewhat?)

they were always bad for your knees anyway. you wanna work them out go walk/jog/run many miles. tryna lift 420lbs is not what they were meant for.

From your upper body probably nothing all that chit about squats stimulating broad growth is broscience.

But there's no right answer in terms of what is best you can do no gym at all it's not compulsory! I squat what I can lift off the ground which is 60kg and 10 sets of 12 reps is my complete leg day. I just hiked 50 or so hilly kilometres with a pack with only 3 recent walking exercise sessions and didn't notice much difference to when I did no weights but lots of hill walking. My legs aren't tree trunks but they're toned and fit and functionally fit from modest weight training.

I wouldn't switch it off entirely just alter the program to be more about fitness than mass building. Whatever you do it should be regular not just biking when the weather is good.

Have you tried lifting with more volume with shorter rest periods? I used to lift heavy for legs. But, had the same results with knee discomfort. Only do weight I can do 15-20 reps of these days. Still put on size and absolutely no knee discomfort

jogging is worse for your knees than squatting

also do what you want OP, but I'd still at least do some maintenance volume for legs. It takes a lot to build mass but not a lot to keep mass/strength, which you will still need if you plan to pursue other activities like biking seriously.

Try doing just a set or two of hard squats a week at the end of your workout, you should be good. you don't even need to go that heavy, maybe sets of 10 at 70-75% of your 1RM, very close to failure since you wouldn't be doing it often. It's possibly you could even get away with doing it every 2 weeks. At least still lift legs for the strength aspect.

If I was 218lbs and squatting 300 hurts my knees, I'd look at my squat to see why my knees hurt.

Post a squat vid or two OP.

Start daily stretching op. I used to have knee pain to the point where I'd have to skip about half my leg workouts. After like 4 months of stretching I have no issues anymore.

If that's not something you can be bothered with you could always just step it down a little.

You could just do some squats with like 135 at the end of your workouts.

If you subscribe to what Jay Cutler has said--once you get your legs the size you want them--you can maintain them by squatting 225 for sets of 12 on leg day. So obviously not heavy, but enough to keep the size. Try that and gauge your pain levels.

this

High reps crew. I got to where I could squat 420 for reps and then said "I'm good". Now just do high reps with lower weights. Lot of lunges, hamstring curls, leg press etc

These. My legs look better when doing reps at around 225 or 275. Just have like a fun/heavy session one a month or once every few months. You'll be fine and your joints and back will thank you in the long run. Sometimes just feels silly killing myself with super heavy weight.
