well if you assume the brain doesnt generate it - that means you think its some deliberately given gift like say from a God?

it's interesting to think how this plays into artificial intelligence. very soon we'll have things that can out perform humans in every area, but will they be conscious?

It's pretty obvious it does since damage to the brain can alter or completely remove your consciousness.

I believe people can easily be brain washed by subliminal messaging and programmed influencers, I believe this concludes that ones consciousness is formed more than just ones brain, but the environment their mind and body is brought up in.

That works, but it's introducing something kind of out of nowhere. For example, what is the mechanism by which consciousness arises? If we think it is from the formation and function of the brain, then we can sort of say when it could start and when it isn't there. But if we use the idea that the brain is just a receiver, then when does your consciousness actually emerge and how?

You know I can just as easily begin my rabbit hole of questions that can't be answered (ie the "Big Bang" for example).

The big bang itself is pretty well established, but I think you're thinking of the very creation of the universe. It's possible all of this just comes from a quantum fluctuation lol. But yeah, there are always unanswered questions.

yes the brain is a biochemical computer and the body is just the kinetic/wiring/processing power that allows the brain to process external stimuli and "experience" the universe from a conscious perspective.

but remember there are 3 major centers of the brain: reptilian, mammalian, and neocortex (human). so all animals/reptiles are conscious but only humans have the third portion that allows us to contemplate reality and come up with farfetched theories like matrix simulation theory.

the metaphysical is where it gets interesting. meditation, different brainwave frequencies, psychic connection to the universal one/god, etc

Well I've posted these to you before, but trying to not go off on a big tangent and stick to the most relevant points - a highly compressed point of matter that would go on to create the entire known universe (came from nothing) would then "bang" at a rate FAR beyond the speed of light and go on to occupy a massive space that (came from nothing).

Therefore, the "came from nothing" argument doesn't hold much weight here. "Quantum fluctuation" well were did the energy to "fluctuate" come from, and where did the space that fluctuation occupied come from?

It didn't really "bang", but there was inflation. The very space itself has stretched. That's why if you look at the size of our universe in terms of light years radially, it's like 47 billion light years even though we think the universe is like 14 billion years old. There is no energy required for a quantum fluctuation. That's one of the shocking results from quantum field theory. And we have some reason to believe these fluctuations actually happen. The casimir effect is something that can be directly observed in a real world experiment that many would use to argue the actual existence of these fluctuations.

The neocortex is not unique to humans. It's there in the other mammals, just to different degrees. No one can say exactly what is going through the mind of, say, a dolphin or a chimpanzee.

That didn't really answer any of my questions, and doesn't address the "came from nothing" (in the grand scheme of things) part which is the point I'm ultimately getting at.

However, if you want to simply go with the "Quantum fluctuation doesn't require any energy" then that would be really inconsistent with your "came from nothing" argument in regards to consciousness being a solely physiological phenomenon.

Right. We don't know where the universe came from or if it came from anything. We know that empty space can have quantum fluctuations. But that's the best we have. The stuff about inflation was to explain the "faster than light" bang you're talking about. Why is it inconsistent? You have to realize that energy isn't a defined property. It's an observable and it isn't sharply defined. There's some wiggle room, if you will.

Here is another example of a directly observable real world phenomenon that is explained via quantum fluctuations.

http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu...ntum/lamb.html

The LIGO project observed macroscopic effects of quantum fluctuations because of the sensitive design of their experiment.

repped for catching that false dichotomy. should have said, humans have the largest cerebral cortex, and even in humans the ability to operate at higher thinking is dictated largely by the amount of gray/white matter present (the duality of left and right brain thinking). Einstein for example had an abnormal amount of gray matter.

We are all god experiencing itself simultaneously.

The way I see it, there’s no free will, we are all infinite beings, part of the collective infinite consciousness that goes through every experience infinitely.

“God” created a perfectly balanced infinite world, and experiences consciousness on every level from the a plant, to a tree to an ant, to US as humans. Created in a way where things happen in the “now”. Everything is balanced.

Inconsistent because of your claiming the universe could have came from energy that "came from nowhere", but used the "came from nowhere" as an argument against consciousness being anything other than being physiological/the materialist perspective. In other words - you have no problem with the "came from nowhere" idea when it comes to the universe, but seem to suddenly find it far more dubious when it comes to consciousness independent of the physical brain.
