I think the common denominator starts with mental well-being. And that starts with addressing common deficiencies like lack of omega fatty acids and trace minerals/aminos that are known to benefit brain chemistry.
Then committed/focused meditation without getting too hung up on fantasies of enlightenment or out of body experiences to recalibrate the brainwaves that often get skewed towards beta-dominant brainwaves in people who don't meditate to shift it back towards the subconscious dominant spectrum.
Then and only then can you build on that foundation to catalyze self-discipline, but I'm not a neuroscientist, and the brain is still not well understood by the most qualified intellectuals, so it's prudent to use your own calculated judgment and experience to come to well-founded conclusions
