Slab Leak at my house (anyone been through this)

Had a leak coming from behind my water heater. Had a plumbing company come out and they are telling it's beneath/in the slab. They won't know how deep it is until they chip out some of the concrete/slab to get a look at it.

They're telling me it could be $1500-2500 if it's easily accessible to repair. Or that it might be less risky to re-pipe ($6-7k) because just repairing could lead to add'l problems down the road.

Anyone ever been through this kinda chit? Feeling angry/helpless right now.

Can't they snake a camera down the line to find the break?

When I was a kid, we had the hot water line that fed the house from the water heater in the garage break. We were able to determine roughly where it was by the foundation being warm with bare feet. Ended up being the right spot.

Do the repair. I rather risk 1500 now. If it works you are golden if not, well you gotta pay up. Hopefully they don’t mess the repair up on purpose to get to have to hawk 8k out later. Get a reputable place. There are many good plumbers but many scum as well. Get a few estimates

This is key. If the pipe is deteriorating (copper in acidic soil or some flavor of plastic that has become brittle) then you might be throwing good money after bad to repair it.

$2,500 would go a long ways towards re piping above ground.

The source is not 100% determined, but its just a break of some sort. It's leaking from within the slab, but can't tell if its right below where the pipe meets the concrete, or deeper below. Since the leaking water is coming up and out, it's my belief its not that deep. But won't know until they chip some concrete away.

Interesting, they did not give me that as an option. Maybe I'll run that by them.

I think this is the route I'm leaning towards, take the risk with great reward if it works out
