because it's boring and offers no diversity in competition. there are only two main lifts, the clean and jerk and the snatch lift

brb everyone is lifting the same amount of weight, the gold medal winner squeaks by by about 1 kg to take home gold
brb the girls look like roided men

something like gymnastics where girls are slimmer, hotter, and wear tights would be more popular to the general public

im not knocking on the sport, i like oly lifting, just talking from the standpoint of a casual viewer who doesnt understand it

cos strength above what you get as an average bodybuilding bro-split enjoyer, is irrelevant in 2021

Because it insanely technical and difficult.
Gotta start at a young age or at least be extremely flexible.

Access to equipment may be a factor. Bumper plates/platform/good barbell aren't as common and you need that
Best lifts:
Bench press: 315x5
Squat: 465x1
Strict press: 205x5
Deadlift: 405x13 (conv tap'n'go with straps)

All these guys saying oly lifting is strength lmao… I mean they’re not wrong but it’s extremely technical with high specificity. Brute strength is better measured in strongman or powerlifting

Well, it's not popular in the United States but that doesn't mean it isn't popular elsewhere. But olympic lifting has three main problems from an American perspective:

1) No Americans at the world-class elite level. This seems to be slowly changing-two American men were in the A group in the last two days in Tokyo, and we have women reaching the top level as well. But what was the last time we had an American world champion? Might have to go back to the 1950s or 60s. Young American kids aren't really going to be interested in a sport where they have to look up to some guy from China or Kazakhstan when there are alternatives in which the top stars are homegrown.

2) Olympic lifting, as a strength sport, competes with powerlifting and strongman for talent. And while the snatch and jerk are not difficult to learn, they do have a steeper learning curve compared to the three power lifts and most strongman events. Talented kids tend to gravitate to the activity they can excel in faster, and I personally think it's easier to plateau in weight with the O-lifts.

3) Olympic lifting tends to have a more insular and exclusive culture than other strength sports. I've trained in lots of hardcore gyms in various places which dont care how you train or what you compete in, but Olympic lifting is generally the opposite. They tend to have dedicated gyms where you have to do only Olympic lifts and follow a specific program to the T. Which is fine I suppose if you're actually turning out champions, but I tend to think that's poser BS 90% of the time. Oly gyms and practitioners would do themselves a favor by not being such assclowns, to be honest.

Just my two cents

Because they can't lift the same kind of weight that powerlifting techniques allow. A big strong gymbrah can squat or DL some of the weights they are using. Same reason why tiny weight classes in combat sports are less popular.

Vanishingly few gyms actually allow/have the facilities for it. Highly technical and most people just want to build muscle.

Don’t think anyone really mentioned it yet but I assume the biggest thing is you need a coach to get anywhere mildly impressive. You can do them on your own but you’ll build bad habits and plateau hard. Much easier to bench and squat compared to a flawless snatch. How many people are going to train with a legit oly lifting coach on a schedule?

Probably because lifting is such a big thing that there's a hundred ways to compete

Bodybuilding, olympic lifting, strongman, powerlifting, crossfit, etc.

You grab a 45 pound barbell. You put a couple 45 pound plates on it then you do either of the two lifts.

All it takes is a barbell, a few plates and 3 feet of space.
