Can I Become A Proficient Driver In A Month?

So here is the situation, I got my drivers permit when I was 19 years old. I never ended up getting my license, I’ve been a victim of procrastination. I tried learning how to drive but I was finding it very difficult so I gave up. However my drivers permit expires in about a month and a half. So I would need to go through the entire process again of studying, passing the test, then learning how to drive, and then finally getting my license. So I decided that I am just going to attempt to get my license before my permit expires. Today I practiced with my Dad and I did fairly well, I was able to drive on the road with minimal cars out.

What do you say boyos? Do you have faith that I can become good enough to pass the drivers license test in the next month and a couple weeks? Or is that an unrealistic goal?

That’s good to hear, I really don’t want to be taking steps back. I’m trying to get my life together now after slacking for so long.

I wasn’t sure if it was likely or possible, Google which I know isn’t always reliable said this.

Hurry up and take the test ASAP. You might fail the first time, but the route they have you go on during the test is the same route every time. Just practice the route you go on and you will get 100% the next time like I did.

You failed the first time? I know where the tests are held, after a couple of weeks of general practice I’m going to go there and practice for a couple of weeks.

Then I will schedule my test, I have till the end of September to take this test, if I don’t take it by then my permit expires and I will have to do that over again which I really don’t want to do.

It really isn't that hard bro, as long as you have a good awareness of your surroundings and don't do stupid chit as a result of over-confidence, you'll already be better than 50% of the drivers already on the road.

Best advice I can give when on the freeway and wanting to change lanes is to check your mirrors first, put on your indicator second, check your blind spot third, then merge. I remembered it as "Men In Black" or "M.I.B" = Mirrors Indicator Blindspot. Do it in that order and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the advice, I have ADD so things like driving aren’t the easiest for me to pick up. But I did well today and I think as long as I am in the right mindset and not overthinking, I should be good.

Well I failed the first time mostly due to the woman giving me the test was a kunt. Didn't pay much attention when I was driving. She gave me **** driving directions then marked me down for "driving too slow" when I was looking for the turn she wanted me to take. Tells me to merge to the left lane, dumbass in the left lane wouldn't make room when I had my signal on. Left turn was coming up, so I just hit the gas and merged. She docked me points because I "cut him off"

But then the next time I took the test I got 100%. I attribute it to having a different woman give me the test and she actually watched me the whole time.

Fuk, it’s seems like that is a really important factor, whoever they assign to do your test is a significant part of passing or not. I often drive slow, I guess because I’m not really comfortable driving too fast yet. Hopefully I don’t get marked for that, I am very cautious because I have to be.

Not sure how it is now, but sometimes it takes a while to get the appointment anyway, so you might want to look at setting an appt tomorrow.

Thanks, and yeah I am calling them tomorrow, I will explain my situation to them. Regardless I will be practicing, although I don’t want to have to retake the permit test, sometimes you have to take a step back in order to take steps forward.

OP I have faith in you brother you got this. Since you said you like to procrastinate a lot...I would emphasize while practicing to get used to always checking both of your mirrors before you switch lanes then indicate. Start getting into the habit of you indicating once you do that it will become a habit.

That's one of the biggest parts of the test is indicating, and just maintaining your speed most of the time it will be 40 or 45 mph. Some people get carried away, and start going 50, and don't even notice. Doesn't have to be exactly 45, but around there.

my early 20s friend who was in the same situation as you, he drove my car around as practice a few times a week for about a month and passed his drivers license test. This was in chitty bay area city traffic.

u got this no problem especially if you're practicing daily.

Thank you, I have to get used to driving at that speed range. I definitely wouldn’t be comfortable driving at the speed consistently right now, but hopefully I am able to make improvements quickly. The lack of time is a problem, I wish I would have been able to find the motivation sooner.

That’s good to hear, the area they do the tests near me isn’t too busy usually. I don’t think they make you go on the freeway or anything like that. I just need things to start going well in my life, another failed effort at something is really the last thing I need.

You will learn that is for sure. As for proficiency I wouldnt mind since 90% of drivers on traffic are morons

First rule of traffic= everyone is a moron. That car on left lane can suddenly steer towards me. That pedestrian on sidewalk can jump to the road at any second. Always take precautionary measures for these.


Second rule of traffic= never trust anything including yourself.

I think that’s been my biggest challenge with driving so far, I’ve often had issues focusing on things I wasn’t interested in, for me driving is a boring chore so it makes it really difficult for me to constantly be aware of a bunch of things.

But it’s whatever, it’s something I have to do. I had to pass up a couple job opportunities because I didn’t have a car and I wasn’t going to rely on my parents all the time. Now I am starting to go broke because I have spent all my savings from previous work. So I need this license so I can work, so I can get any sort of fuking momentum in my life.

I’m 24 years old, in the same boat I was in when I was 18 practically.

you have a family member to practice with. I dont..

I’ve gotten away with never learning since I lived in NYC, but I have to now that I’m in Florida. Glad to see this thread tbh.

I learned to drive in 1 week with manual transmission which is standard here. You can most definitely learn to drive an automatic in a month. The real learning experience really begins after you pass your test, you'll be picking up on little things for a good year after you pass. Good luck.

Yeah in total I’ve driven about 10-11 times, hasn’t really gotten much easier yet. Although last night was particularly good so maybe I’m finally seeing improvements. That was the first time I drove in a while though. It is a bit scary considering all the things you need to be aware of, not only your own actions but constantly making sure other people aren’t making drastic mistakes. The consequences of making a mistake or failing to see someone else’s can be fatal.
