I know it’s best to go and check them out in person, but looking to just buy one online to play around with and beat around on. Anybody ever try a fiberglass acoustic like the LAVA brand guitars? They seem steep…would like something maybe half that price ($799). $300-400 seems reasonable for a decent acoustic and for what I need. Anything on Amazon even worth a look?

but if you're looking for some starter guitar, just buy something off Sweetwater dot com. Get like a Yamaha or Taylor

had a Yamaha F310, sold it when moving, really good tone and really light and easy to get started (taught my friend how to play guitar on it in 1hr srs)

Cheapest solid top acoustic with a neck you like, that’s most important.

I got a Yamaha FG for like $200, solid Sitka spruce top, shredder neck, super thin neck easy to play, sounds huge.

Your takamines and Martins tend to be thicker necks, Taylor’s medium. Just have to try a few.

buy a used Taylor GS Mini then pay $75 to get it set up by a pro. Will run you total ~$500 or less. Cheap acoustics are mainly garbage and you'll give up early on in your trying because they are too difficult to play. Get something decent and with a smaller body size and/or shorter scale. Yamahas are OK on the cheaper end.

I'm surprised hearing Yamaha so much. I think their cheaper guitars are better than most cheap guitars, but for the most part don't like them. Takamine's are nice but more expensive, but even their cheaper ones are pretty nice. This whole thick neck thing everyone talks about is confusing me, every brand has a thinner neck option even at lower prices. I just bought a sick Ibanez for around 500 off Sweetwater about a year ago and it's amazing. My brother's Martin was a little more from guitar center and it sounds great too. Both feel great too. You can get a nice guitar for that price, online i'd recommend sweetwater. They have your guitar checked by a tech and sign the checklist before they send it and if it's messed up when you get it they fix it.

Actually, check out ovation op, they have some 300-400 dollar acoustic electric guitars that sound decent with our without an amp, sounds your style.

I bought a Yamaha F335 a while back, and it was only like $150 if I remember correctly. I've been happy with it actually. Stays in tune pretty well, has a nice rich sound, good enough action out of the box.

I'm just a hobbyist though, so maybe some real misc shredders have better insight.

Get a used ovation fibreglass. That or an all solid Eastman E1 OM. Don't buy new. Old guitars sound better.

you want something that's going to insipire you to play. if you get something that's crappy, you're not going to want to play it.

if its your first guitar set a budget of ~$500. go to your local stores and try a bunch out, buying online is pointless because it is more about the sound and the feel then what it looks like. everybody likes different guitars too so its important to try em out yourself

If that's his first guitar (assuming he's a beginner) he won't know much about the "feel". Rather just play with it and see if neck size and thickness fits him and what tone he prefers. But yeah I totally agree to go out to store and try them out, actually good idea is to ask for advice there, they will surely find something nice for him. I believe a nicely setup new (cheaper) guitar would suit him better than some (more expensive) second hand guitar that's not neccessarily in best condition. That's all said assuming he's a beginner.
