James McAvoy vs Tom Hardy

Which actor do you prefer between these two? I know Tom Hardy is very popular among the misc, so I’d imagine the vast majority of you would say him but I figured I’d ask just for the sake of conversation.

Not long ago I saw the films Split and Glass starring McAvoy and was highly impressed by both his physical transformation and his acting ability.

From there I ended up checking out some of his other films such as Filth, Wanted, Victor Frankenstein, Atomic Blonde, and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. All solid films, with him being the shining performance in them. He actually reminds me a lot of Tom Hardy in terms of his ability to physically transform for roles, his acting style and intensity, and the fact they are both shorter guys (McAvoy at 5’7 and Hardy at 5’9) from the UK (McAvoy a Scot and Hardy an Englishman).

Personally both actors are in my top 5 favorites, but I think I slightly prefer McAvoy at this time. I would love to see them both star in a movie together.

mcavoy's performance in Split is second to none. The transformations with the utmost subtlety is truly amazing. It's borderline criminal how underappreciated his performance was.

I wish there were full length gifs of some of these.

I like Tom Hardy a lot, I’ve seen almost all his films. As an actor nothing he’s done has quite impressed the way McAvoy’s work in Split and Glass did in terms of acting ability and Tom is definitely a fantastic actor. Honestly McAvoy should have been nominated for an Oscar for those performances. There is only a couple inches between them, really hardly noticeable.

Yes! I agree 100%. I’m glad someone here agrees with me. In my opinion in terms of movies made in the last 20 years, his performance in Split and Glass are only rivaled by Jake Gyllenhaals performance in Nightcrawler and Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in Joker.

I mean I watched Tom Hardy talk to himself in a car in the movie Locke and it was entertaining lol. Can't get better than that.

That’s a respectable opinion, I would agree with that. While McAvoy is the slightly superior actor, Tom Hardy has made better films thus far.

Concerning their acting/performing, it’s difficult to compare the two, but I think Hardy has slightly more range.

Off camera (or rather, when they’re just themselves doing talk shows, interviews, etc) McAvoy is by far the more entertaining and likeable of the two. He’s also funny as fuk.

I think McAvoy could do everything Hardy has done but I don’t think Hardy could do everything McAvoy has done. So by that reasoning I would give McAvoy a slight edge, but that’s my subjective opinion.

I agree that McAvoy comes off as the more likable person, he seems like he would be a good time to hangout with and I feel like I’d get along with him. Where as I feel Tom Hardy takes himself a little too seriously sometimes, like he’s still trying to play a tough guy often times. But I’ve also seen him let his guard down and be quite funny as well, I guess it depends.

Hardy if only for his performance in Locke. Lesser known film and highly recommend.

I thought the opposite tbh.

I love most of McAvoy’s performances, but ‘Wanted’ really demonstrated to me a way in which he’s limited. Completely miscast in that film and didn’t come across as a convincing bad ass at all. Ergo, I cannot see McAvoy replacing Hardy in any of his hard man roles, such as DKR, Warrior, etc.

I can’t see Hardy doing as good a job in something like Split though, but on the whole, I think Hardy would have an easier time stepping into most of McAvoy’s roles than vice versa.

I don’t think Tom Hardy could do some
of the more tender roles McAvoy did like Narnia for example, I don’t think really he could do Split or Glass at least not all the characters. But I would agree McAvoy wouldn’t have been able to play Bane. Just on the account that he’s too small, even in Split he was only 160lbs range. But his acting ability wouldn’t hold him back from it I don’t think.

He’s just a legit 5’7 guy, I think a lot of peoples perception of what 5’7 actually looks like can be a bit warped because the amount of 5’5-5’6 guys claiming to be 5’7. But a man who’s actually a legit 5’7 without shoes, can pull off looking lower average range with good posture and proportions, and some larger footwear can help obviously. While guys in the 5’6 range and under are going to look legit short regardless.

I have to be honest, while Heath’s performance was objectively very good and certainly his best work, I do think it’s a very overrated performance. Personally I rank Tom Hardy’s Bane above Heath Ledger’s Joker. It’s not a legendary performance by any means in my opinion and I think Heath’s death is primarily what cemented it as such a legendary performance. I think people would have been talking about it either way, but people throwing that performance around like it’s up there with some of the most elite performances…I just don’t get it.
