Microsoft’s upcoming release of Windows 11 will make it even harder to switch default browsers and ignores browser defaults in new areas of the operating system.

In Windows 11, Microsoft has changed the way you set default apps. Like Windows 10, there’s a prompt that appears when you install a new browser and open a web link for the first time. It’s the only opportunity to easily switch browsers, though. Unless you tick “always use this app,” the default will never be changed. It’s incredibly easy to forget to toggle the “always use this app” option, and simply launch the browser you want from this prompt and never see this default choice again when you click web links.

If you do forget to set your default browser at first launch, the experience for switching defaults is now very confusing compared to Windows 10. Chrome and many other rival browsers will often prompt users to set them as default and will throw Windows users into the default apps part of settings to enable this.

Microsoft has changed the way default apps are assigned in Windows 11, which means you now have to set defaults by file or link type instead of a single switch. In the case of Chrome, that means changing the default file type for HTM, HTML, PDF, SHTML, SVG, WEBP, XHT, XHTML, FTP, HTTP, and HTTPS.

All tech companies want you on their virtual plantation, so they can pull info about your browsing habits, and then advertise to you more effectively.

That's why a lot of people are saying that if you end up deep in debt because you have been duped into buying a lot more that you normally would have, don't fee guilty about defaulting or bankrupting it all.

this is what's called the slippery slope. Microsoft was already known for shady **** in the 90s but they never got taken down

windows is literally dog**** and the only reason people use it is because it has the most support, the product itself is garbage.

I clung to 7 on my old machine until it died.

I also did that thing I looked up on Reddit about how to get a student email address from obscure community colleges, then get the free student version of Office.

Which distro? Ubuntu is just as bad as Windows according to the hardcore privacy dudes. The Based God Richard Stallman dominated their holes pretty hard in this vid.

Constant stream of updates till the computer is pretty much bricked.

I'm at a point where I just use a cell or a cheap tablet for online and just use the computer pretty much offline.

I think Arch is the go to distro the cool kids all use nowadays (if you have the right processors).

What are your thoughts on Stallman's takedown of the Ubuntu code? Apparently Ubuntu is shipping data to Canonical out the back. I'd say stay away from it and all its associated distros if you're concerned about privacy and that's why you're on Linux in the first place.

I won't use Firefox anymore after they went woke, so I'm Brave crew now.

That being said, I use Edge at work and it's better than plain Chrome. In Edge you can actually set it to delete browsing data on exit, where Chrome makes you use incognito if you don't want your data to stay in the browser (or manually clear).

Word. I have one Windows and one MacOS device for work, but my personal device is dual-booted on Linux and Windows and the only reason I have the Windows at all is so I can get my game on. Too many of the titles I play are unavailable on Linux because they are from smaller shops and the Windows emulators for Linux are phucking chit.

I actually don't think Edge is too bad TBH for the reasons you mentioned.

The privacy thing was more of a bonus for me. I also love the fact that you are in complete control of your system and can change almost anything you want. It's definitely easier to screw up your OS playing around too much though lol, but it's a good way to learn

One of the great things about linux is that you can test out distros with the live version on a USB. It's possible with the majority of distros, it will just be slightly slower because the OS is running completely off the USB instead of your hard drive.

LMAO yes. Have definitely phucked my system up tons of times trying to do something completely trivial and not needed.

The online communities are extensive enough that you can usually get yourself out of any kind of trouble though.

Basically same user story with me as well, just wanted to try something new and get better working from the terminal. Haven't really regretted it, and never getting bricked by updates or viruses is a major bonus.
