Miscers who moved abroad/into another state
Where were you, where did you go, and what were the reasons for you to do so? I'm preparing to move from Connecticut to Wyoming in October. I'm doing so for a much lower cost of living, and I enjoyed the lower population, cleaner air, scenery and it being a deep red state. I consider myself right leaning, but I'd much rather be in a red state than a blue one.
I like my job, but not enough to keep me here. What will be tough for me is that most of my family is here, and while I'm thankful to have good relationships with my parents, I don't like where the state is going economically. Property taxes around my job are anywhere from $500-600 a month for most houses in the $200-240k range.
Any of you miscers have any other examples?

Last September, I moved from Illinois to Washington state. I couldn't stay there anymore. My husband is dead, my family's matriarch is dead, and the house I lived in was seized by the city for her unpaid medical bills. My career as a professional musician was over (surprisingly not due to Covid), and there was no life for me there anymore. No romantic or career opportunities, my family was broken up, and too many memories of days forever gone.
So I packed up my car on Sept 20th, and drove across the country by myself with the promise of finding a new life. Nowadays, I'm barely getting by, and realizing that I had it too good for too long. I don't know how others support themselves at all. Most of my hard-earned collection of things is gone, I never see my old friends from home anymore, and nothing has really changed for the better.
Before the move, people kept asking me "Are you going out there for work?". I wasn't - and no one would hire me at a 2000-mile distance unless I could start next week, which (at the time) I surely couldn't. I was in search of a better life with more social opportunities, better career choices, and just starting over. All that remained for me in Illinois was stagnation and disappointment. I have to wait for things to get better when the need is more urgent. Waiting will only put me further into debt, and possibly danger.
But I perservere! I'm in an okay situation - not at all what it was, but I'm hanging in here. Someday, I'll look back on this time and say, "What a crazy year that was! I struggled, but it made me a better man, and hail Satan that it's finally behind me. One of the best choices I ever made."

Ex and I moved from TX to MI around 2014 because he took a job there. I sincerely like a lot about the area we lived in. The negatives were distance from my family, bad roads, and winters that are just too long and dark for me.
Looking at moving again due to circumstances. My dad died within the first 6 months of our move to MI and my mom died almost exactly 2 years ago. I've moved around a lot [mostly within TX] to the point that I don't have any real close adult relationships left. Some distant family in TX, a couple of friend's of my mother's who check in now and then, and a sprinkle of old acquaintances from earlier in my last marriage that don't live nearby or really reach out much at all.
House is valued about $200K and the property tax is $4K a year w/homestead exemption.
I've been in analysis paralysis for a while, but time's up.

Wood advise not to do it srs. i moved from Ohio to Colorado a few years back (before moving back to ohio and then back to Wyoming) and did it for a more funner life but when you uproot and reality hits you a few months after you get here, an you realize you have zero ocnnections, friends and family is 1000 miles away youre gonna wish you hadnt moved.
Call it what you want but 100% wish i had never moved away from Ohio. Had a paid off house and a $24/hr job. Yeah i make considerably more here but the culture fukkin suks. brb purple haired freaks and trannies everywhere srs
On the bright side if youre in Cheyenne then wellington / fort collings / windsor / loveland are labout 45mins away and there is all kinds of chit to do there. all depends if cheyenne i where you go. there's also Casper, Cody and Buffalo. a few pretty decent places i hear.
But yeah, wood not advis. People get lost in the "idea" of it all til reality hits them in the face as soon as plans dont go as planned. friends, roots and family trump anything any other place could give you.

Moved from Virginia to Portland, OR 6 years ago for work. 68k to 80k, and now I'm making 120k. ****ing sucks with what happened here the past year, but I'm holding out that it'll get better. If not, I have money to go pretty much wherever I want now anyway.

I moved a lot as a kid (not military). Ended up in Michigan for the last few years of HS. Went to college in MI, went to CA for graduate school. Went to Houston, TX for work. Was laid off after 4 years, contracted for a year then went to Saudi Arabia (much better money and an opportunity to travel to places). Stayed there 10 years, was offered a decent position with a great company and moved the family to Minnesota. That was 22 years ago. I decided to stay put in MN so that my kids would have a stable social environment in which to grow up in - good decision. Now that they're grown, wife and I are finishing construction on a house in Thailand (wife's mom built it, we're kitting it out), good wintertime escape place. Not sure if/when we'll downsize in MN. I like it here even with the winter.
