Misc'ers and Stoicism

I'm curious about this. It seems like a lot of Misc'ers would understand.

Willing to explicate on anything and have open dialog.

As I've become an old man (35), I have begun the process of reevaluating my life and my approach to life.

I've experienced much in my 35 years. Loss of a parent, loss of a love and gain of another, loss of wealth to gain of wealth,, loss of my own control, and loss of everything I thought I knew.

The primary tenants of Stoicism are many, but it can be immediately boiled down to:
- I can only focus on what I can control
- life happens, but what I experience is based on how I respond
- Complaints are a fool's errand. Do something, change your circumstance, or choose the world in which you live.

There's so much more, but I hope others will bring more to the table with their experiences with Stoicism and what the practice means to them.

Basically: If its a constant, leave it alone. Anomalies is where you should devote your mental battery towards as those usually require more effort.

If Brenda in HR is a bitch, all the time.....ignore her and realize its a constant. If Jim your boss is being a dick and he never is, you have the mental battery powered up enough to deal with whatever maybe going on......maybe team isn't meeting metrics, maybe his wife is cheating on him, maybe whateverthefuk. But if hes always nice to you and has your back, its where you use your mental battery to make sure hes ok.

Yes, Stoicism can be very powerful. I highly recommend a branch of it called "traditional stoicism". There's a FB group and a guy does a really great podcast called "Stoicism on Fire" (Chris Fisher). I also highly recommend everything that the "college" does, check them out here:https://collegeofstoicphilosophers.org/

For me it really boils down to accepting Nature and wishing for things to be as they are. Controlling your assents and aversions, vice and virtues, etc. But at the end of the day to truly experience joy or a good flow in life (eudaimonia) you have to match your personal nature with the cosmic Nature. The more out of line those are the worse of a flow in life you'll have.

Getting those in line are all the things y'all are talking about in regards to desires and aversions (what you can and cannot control). Making the correct decisions day in and day out to progress. Not hiding away in the garden elsewhere but being in the midst of the citadel and being an active player in society.

Finally, I'll recommend a few books. Many people tend to read intro books and modern popular books. I recommend for absolute beginners Stoicism by Sellars. After that take a deep dive into Epictetus and Seneca and then Marcus's Meditations. After that I highly recommend The Inner Citadel by Pierre Hadot. From here you should have an extremely solid foundation in Stoicism and already have a practice going yourself. Remember, the practice is greater than the theory. After that there's plenty of authors I can recommend if anyone has read these already and want to continue (but I'd recommend staying away from the beta male Ryan Holiday and most other modern authors that sell on Amazon, with the slight exception of William Irvine and Donald Robertson - but again these are very basic books so might as well read Sellars imo).

In. Stoicism is based and one of the most important guiding philosophies in my life. Any miscers looking to join Misc Stocism Crew, start here-- Meditations by Marcus Aurelius:http://classics.mit.edu/Antoninus/meditations.html

Yeah stoicism is cool. I also practice it in tandem with Epicureanism. Here are some cool videos I found on the subject:

But I have to say studying Stoicism on the internet was more beneficial to me than reading the philosophical works.

I love that Misc'ers are on board and this is picking up some traction.

It's truly been an "awakening" experience for me and I now find myself, even in some very difficult times, falling back on Stoicism - as a philosophical practice and approach to life. And this is coming from a Christian.

Great recommendations thus far, and of course "meditations" is a great starting point. Although men like Seneca and Epictetus were the founding fathers, so to speak, Marcus truly brought this to the forefront and directly illustrated the Stoic power of living while ruling an empire.

I'd also recommend "Think Like a Roman Emporer". The Audiobook is perfect for morning meditation walks.

One thing about Stoicism I'm recently exploring is "Meditate on your own mortality daily". A sort of homage to life is short. But the cornerstone of Stoicism is a life of Virtue and honor. If you spend even a moment each morning contemplating your own mortality, does that not give credence to a focus of a life worth living? A life or meaning, Virtue. Integrity, and honor?

what build stoicism
is the lack of attachment
to soceity, we live as an indiviuals
work x work...party with temporary friends
once a problem occur, they leave...etc etc
the bless of giving back shouldnt be only with
MONEY, it could be with time or supporting parties together
for the general good...for instance helping the charity with other business's
helping your neighborhood...etc

we font give back
or we give to the wrong person!

leads to more
depressive outcomes

"Everything in any way beautiful has its beauty of itself, inherent and self-sufficient: praise is no part of it. At any rate, praise does not make anything better or worse. This applies even to the popular conception of beauty, as in material things or works of art. So does the truly beautiful need anything beyond itself? No more than law, no more than truth, no more than kindness or integrity. Which of these things derives its beauty from praise, or withers under criticism? It's not that you don't ever worry - part of that is going to be purely instinctual and on a base lizard-brain level. It's more about not letting it control you or consume your life.

I wanted to read On Anger specifically, so I went out and picked up a hardback copy of that Basore Vol 1 translation last year. Absolutely worth it for me

Agree, I prefer having hard copies as well. Nothing can beat the feeling of holding a book in your hands while your read.

That's one of the primary drivers that brought me closer to this.

Reading through it and delving deeper, I realized, unknowingly, some of the best chapters of life were when I was unconsciously practicing several tenants of Stoicism.

I'm a natural worrier. I over-think and over-analyze everything... and it's all precipitated by a need to control everything... even that which is naturally and obviously outside of my control.

I've by no means found the solution, but I am on the journey.
