You can get away with murder in Yellowstone

“THE 50-SQUARE-MILE STRETCH OF YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK that spills over Idaho’s border is a legal no-man’s land. It’s an isolated spot, one devoid of roads or any permanent human inhabitants. It’s also missing legislation to allow people to be charged with serious crimes.

The loophole has to do with the Sixth Amendment, which dictates that a jury must be comprised of people from the state and federal district where the crime was committed. Because this portion of Yellowstone is in Idaho and the park itself lies within the jurisdiction of Wyoming, it means a jury for a crime committed there would have to come from people who both live in Idaho and fall under Wyoming’s federal jurisdiction.

It would be an impossible jury to form, as this uninhabited part of the park is the only place to fit such criteria. And since Yellowstone is federal land, the individual states involved have no legal jurisdiction to amend the issue.

Brian Kalt, a law professor at Michigan State University, brought the loophole into the spotlight in 2005. In a paper published in Georgetown Law Journal called “The Perfect Crime,” Kalt outlined the legal technicalities that put this potentially murderous geographic anomaly on the map. He sent copies of his work to various government authorities before it hit print, hoping someone would close the loophole.”

Nothing happened. Even though news of the loophole made national headlines, federal legislators have yet to take any action. Dubbed the “Zone of Death,” the area garnered additional attention after it inspired the 2008 novel Free Fire by C.J. Box, and later the 2016 horror film Population Zero.”

Bro... not being caught not being able to be legally prosecuted by some obscure loophole are two very different things.

This isn't about the isolation. This is about jurisdiction and legal processes.

I would think since the park is Fed land there would be a way for federal charges to be brought

They prosecute people for serious crimes committed outside the country. If anything, the government becomes more powerful without protections.

I can think of some people I would like to place there for their own purge fight.

39% of homicides go unsolved every year, and from what I've seen most murderers are not exactly smart people. You can get away with murder anywhere if you use the least bit of caution, gloves, hairnet, use an illegal gun that you procure a few years prior, don't do it in an area where the gas station across the street sees you on camera and don't leave a cigarette but on the scene or try to dispose of the body (just leave it there).

On the way home cover your car seat with a towel, fill the gun barrel with concrete and throw it into a river, then burn the towel and all your clothes.

What evidence would they use to find you? And if they did what evidence would they find on you?

always wondered why people don't just go out into some remote wilderness and spend a day digging a 6 foot deep hole to dump that chit in. Every time I watch a murder show they just drag it out into the woods behind a gas station and put some leaves on it. like ffs put some effort into something for once in your life, pleb.

Many parts of Yellowstone are so far out there and remote that the likelihood of someone setting up a trip out there just to murder someone is near zero. One would have to be an experienced survivalist/hiker, as does the person you plan on offing.

It’s an interesting theory though.

And a little known fact, they are not all water. Some of them are actually pools of acid!! The ones that don’t spray are more likely to be more acidic. Apparently these waters gather from the volcanic gases and liquids to form acid pools.
