ok but umm sweetie OP you could get covid and be fine but transfer it to someone else who contracts it and dies, mkay? Better go get the jab that allows you to still get the virus, show no symptoms, and can still pass it on to others anyways.

The liberal response would be “but what about the long haul symptoms/permanent organ damage”

I figured there was no way the FDA would present such a chitty-looking slide, lets add a bit of context to this

This slide is actually from the "Open Public Hearing Session" in the FDA's meeting, so it's a portion where other people can present their opinions. The numbers shown in the slide are simply plucked from the Oxford COVID risk calculator

https://qcovid.org/Calculation

And it's being presented by an individual named Joseph Fraiman, an Emergency Medicine Physician in New Orleans who is arguing for larger booster trials to reduce vaccine hesitancy by showing the vaccines reduce hospitalization rates compared to COVID among younger and healthier people

His portion starts here @ 4:17:02 if the time stamped YouTube link doesn't work

Careful these are not actually IFRs. It's risk of dying from covid, not risk of dying from covid infection.

Based on whatever criteria the Oxford calculator uses, sure. I think one qualifier to add would be that this is a 90-day risk and not absolute risk.

But it's taken out of context and tweeted out as something it's not -- the presenter is looking for help to reduce vaccine hesitancy and is arguing for larger trials to show the vaccines are less risky than catching COVID. We know COVID isn't risky for healthy 30 year olds, he wants to show the vaccine is even less dangerous and thinks that will do something to alleviate hesitancy in low-risk groups.

Anyone can go to the Oxford calculator and plug in data to get similar numbers, presenting the slide next to FDA graphics and saying it's "from the FDA meeting" with zero context is at least slightly disingenuous

So the risk calculators provide accurate enough modelling to push the vaccine mandates onto everyone

But

When they are used to show how little risk covid poses to young healthy people they aren’t accurate enough

Even though I'm bigly unlikely to die from covid, I got the vax for a variety of reasons:

- Pneumonia and bronchitis suck, and I'd like to avoid them
- Covid affects your balls
- Even though breakthrough infections occur, I'm still less likely to contract it, and less likely to transmit it to my friends and family who are more vulnerable than us gay misogynistic racists
- Long covid is for proles
- etc

It was not a difficult decision to make.

Gotcha
People working on official modeling ain't using online calculators, though maybe these calculators are based on the same assumptions/data feeding the models

Anyways the accuracy is fine and I doubt anyone would be surprised that a healthy 30-something female is at an extremely low risk of dying from COVID. The issue is with the way this slide is being presented in a tweet from some PhD who works in a completely unrelated field, omitting context and framing it as non-vaxx ammo when it's actually something another doctor used as part of his argument for larger booster trials that will show the vaccines are less risky than catching COVID even in people who are younger/healthier and thus already in low-risk categories. And the purpose of his argument is all about reducing vaccine hesitancy.

If Dr. Dumbo here actually watched the presentation, and I'd assume he did, then he already knows all this and his tweet is constructed with a clear intent. Anyone can go to these calculators and pump out similar numbers, but screenshots of numbers from online calculators don't carry the same weight or implications as a snip from a "FDA Meeting" and next to FDA graphics like it's some grand revelation. So much of this chit starts with a kernel of truth and then is twisted into something else entirely.

And the kernel of truth is that yes, a healthy 30-year-old female has an extremely low risk of dying from COVID. The vaccines will come with an even lower risk, and the doctor from New Orleans who presented this slide wants more data that he can use to convince his younger, healthier, vaccine-hesitant staff that the vaccines still make sense for them despite already not facing much of a threat from COVID.

If this is true then why are they trying so hard to mandate it and force everyone to get it? I've never had covid and I never got the vaccine. I don't know if I've just been lucky or if I have some type of immunity to it

I'm not sure what additional risk you guys imagine would be associated with mixing the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer vs Moderna

I think the questions would be around the degree of immune response created by two mixed doses. But considering evidence is emerging that shows Moderna is superior in terms of providing longer-lasting protection, probably because it hits you with 3x the dose of the Pfizer vaccines, I'm probably better-defended than someone who has two Pfizer doses
