What’s the cost (feed, water, shots etc) to raise a cow compared to the amount of meat you get?

It dollars out to about $5.25 a pound by the time I get to eat it all the way across the board because my food never leaves it home. Should there be any middle men (feeders, butchers etc) it would obviously be higher.

Yes, the mutilated cattle phenomenon is absolutely mind blowing I kid you not. No blood, cauterized wounds and scavengers WILL NOT touch mutilated cattle.

Is the point of finishing on a corn/peanuts/garlic mixture to try and fatten them up a bit to get some more marbling into the meat?

More or less both of those. Marbling is a lot genetic (see wagyu cattle) but this helps. It’s really hard to get well marbled beef off grass only and grass fed beef tastes a touch gamey. The corn is for fat, the peanuts are for oil and shine for a higher quality fat and the garlic is for flavor. As far as I’m aware of I’m the only person that feeds this ration.

Oh yeah bro it’s a real thing and more or less common knowledge amongst ranchers in these parts. Every single one has either testicles or udders removed, sometimes ears, sometimes hooves but ALWAYS testicles or udders. There’s never any blood, the cuts are incredibly accurate, smooth and cauterized as if done by a laser. It can be in the middle of the summer on a 100 degree day and not a fly or any bug for that matter bother them nor will scavengers eat them. They lay there until they decompose. I’ve seen a few YouTube videos that attempt to debunk these stories as just animals dying of natural causes and being eaten by scavengers but as a guy that’s spent 36 years living on a ranch I’ve seen every which way scavengers eat on dead animals and the mutilation instances are absolutely not that.

I’ve heard the same thing but haven’t researched it much, it’s essentially the same thing as feeding them grains. I actually turned a wagyu bull out this year on some select cows to see the quality difference for the beef I run through my steakhouse. Waiting truly is the hardest part.
