Wabi is a japanese terms that reflects on the inherent beauty of imperfections. Wabi architecture follows a rustic and basic style with heavy enphasis in touch and textures.

LOL @ rog claiming it to be wabi

However there is a difference between an imperfect object of beauty and a piss poor crap. It comes from the tradition of breaking and repairing with care to create a final piece better than the unbroken one in Japanese pottery:






Even tho they're imperfect they're more beautiful than what they were when perfect.

Looks cheeky asf BUT would feel a bit 1800s plebian a bit. Also its one of those arrangements where no matter how much you clean, itll kinda look dated and dusty (i get thats part of the aesthetic). Couldn't help but feel like there are bugs running around.

This is an extreme example, but this artist had a badass cave house, living like a paleo wizard.















He was also a crazy muralist hence all the murals everywhere, He living in Mid-century Mexico, at that time the country was a cultural powerhouse.

Probably some evolutionary attraction plays its part, for tens of thousands of years our dwellings were not perfect, they were the best adaptation possible for their weather and location, the concept of "perfect" didn't even exist.

Wherever you look from longhouses to burrows to mud huts to dolmeins they are were pieces of art.




According to people like Jung thens when our collective cultural consciousness, so that's probably why all that is still appealing.

I believe this is WRONG and a misinterpretation of the meaning.

It is NOT about breaking and repairing to make something MORE beautiful.

It IS about embracing and finding beauty with existing imperfections.

It is only wabi if the bowl or item was broken by accident, and then repaired with care. To purposely break the item to repair it in that style would lose all the meaning

Yes it's more about embracing imperfections, however there's a tradition and style in pottery where they do it purposely , that's the one I was referring to.

Interesting, could be also related to the fractal patterns we all see when hallucinating . There are probably lots of hardly engrained collective things burried in our minds. Those subjects blow my mind all the time.
