Without watching the documentary, I believe these were the main reasons

1) US supplied Stingers (anti-air weapon) made it difficult for Soviet airforce to provide close air support.

2) Afghan government/army was riddled with incompetence, corruption, nepotism which made it impossible for the Soviets to rely upon.

3) Indiscriminate attacks on civilians led to hatred of the government and Soviets which led to swelling ranks of the Mujahadeen.

4) Military supplies flowing from Pakistan and elsewhere could not be plugged and the Mujahadeen were constantly resupplied which made it impossible for Soviets to make any headway militarily.

5) Soviet logistics were strained to the max trying to reinforce the east against NATO, keeping control of their own populace, and maintaining a military presence in Afghanistan. With their economy in doldrums, there was anger, resentment, and low morale throughout the Warsaw Pact. It was not uncommon for Solviet military personel to have just one pair of underwear/socks for months on end which they had to wash and clean.

6) With Islamic fundamentalism as their main philosophy, the Mujahadeen were not scared to die and welcomed martyrdom which made it really hard for the Soviets to fight against.

The US invaded Afghanistan to protect Pakistan from radical Islam.

China will invade Afghanistan to protect its southern border and new ally Pakistan from radical Islam.

Agree with all this, the only thing I would add is that the Soviet government was unable to convey convincing propaganda to the average Soviet citizen about what they were really trying to accomplish there so once the intervention turned into an occupation and the occupation turned into an anti-insurgency, there was no way to continue justify an ongoing effort that was costing a nation whose economy was stagnating due to political ideology stifling innovation spending billions of dollars a year on what amounted to a nation-building project in a nation that didn't want to be built.

LMAO they don't call it the graveyard of empires for nothing. They've gone toe-to-toe and come out three and oh against some of the world's baddest, losing millions upon million of their own sons in the process, and the country is still run by inbred goat phuckers.And this is exactly what they were all really trying to do there. Shut down the world's largest open air terrorism and opium market.

I highly doubt anyone will ever dare enter Afghanistan in the near and distant future after the USSR and US/Nato got kicked out. That piece of land is simply unconquerable. The fact that they are a army of people who see glory in war and death mixed with the intense mountain terrain makes them a serious foe.

Everyone saying China is next to try but the Chinese are smart, they are trying to tame Afghanistan via diplomacy and economic investments. They know that economic warfare is the best way to win…. Unlike our politicians who still believe in the failed policies of warfare to spread influence.

I also have to say how nuts it is that the Taliban secured and captured all of Panjshir valley a couple of weeks ago with half the effort.

The Chinese are so smart that their brilliant foreign policy has cooked up a nuclear Pakistan on their border, a nuclear India on their border, a failed state in Afghanistan, an American Navy parked offshore of their most crucial ports, a money-pit infrastructure colonialism project in Africa, an overland trade route project that is bleeding them white via local corruption in the Belt & Road Project countries, a massive Bitcoin industry that turned out to be completely controlled by the US intelligence agencies, and an economic conference in BRICS that they are losing control of.

They are just as incompetent as everyone else stop falling for their soft propaganda about the brilliance of the Beijing Consensus.
