Don’t get it. It’s human nature to want more?

Make $20k a year? Oh chit that’s not enough (it really isn’t lol but can scrape by)

Improve - get to $50k. A year or two later don’t seem enough

Get to $100k

Then $200k

And then more and more and more…like, when does this madness stop?

Yeah, money brings peace of mind (but then my goalposts for that keep moving) that's my main thing, because I can be pretty neurotic about money- otherwise I live simply and am content with that/not into chasing the materialist stuff.

If I don’t sleep it’s gonna be a crappy day. Can’t turn the mind off for a bit

The desire to improve yourself, your business, and your finances can be perfectly healthy as long as it is not consuming your work life balance.

I have turned down numerous jobs that paid a good bit more than what I make because I knew it would destroy my happiness though.

As with all things in life, its about finding the balance that works for you.

We live in a consumer economy that makes people feel like they need to constantly be making more money and buying more/new things.

Also capitalisms is a game, money is the reward.

Also inflation.

Also, the more money I have, the more "freedom" and "personal time" I have and the less I need to worry about the future/my job status etc.

Think of money as influence. When you have the money you can spread your influence to whatever you want.

Want to save the world by protecting the rainforest? What's more effective donating $20 to some charity that you have no idea where the money is going or buying 100,000 acres of the Amazonian rainforest and holding it in preservation?

inflation has really taken a toll on income. say you make 100k a year, you still dont have buying power to pay cash for things like cars and houses. At least not ones youd want to drive and live in. you are still going into massive debt to have the things in life you want. if you could start putting millions in the bank then you would be focused on investing, youd be making money with your money instead of paying interest to others.

I do get your point though, for the average joe there isnt much difference between making 50k and 75k, you just might drive a slightly nicer car and live in a slightly nicer house.

It's mostly because they keep buying stupid sh!t, so if they make more money it gives them more financial flexibility to buy more stupid sh!t and pay their bills. (Ded fkn Srs)

Because consumerism and capitalism have alienated humans into blind greed and psueod productivity. If you look at it from a metaphysical perspective it's made us switch from the plane of the souls solely to the material plane, not a good move imo.

Everyone's point is different. I got to a point in my career awhile ago where work life balance and work stress levels are way more important than salary as I am in a range where I can easily afford to live how I want. Some people are just always chasing the dollar though, don't seem to value their free time or sanity as much as I do.

Now I always tell recruiters I have my price. If we are talking a significant enough raise where I can retire 10 years earlier, I'll hear out anything, because that's work life balance just allocated differently,

I don't get it with the uber rich-tennis players for instance, they are constantly fighting over prize money etc. Yet they have more money than they could ever spend in multiple lifetimes-they hide behind the bs of it is for the lesser guys on tour, but the reality is it is all about them.

Most of the workaholics I know do it because they love their jobs, or at the very least it is something they would much rather do than any other job.

The biggest example is a Prof I know who is a millionaire from selling patented **** he invented to the auto industry so he doesn't even give a **** about his tenure salary that is increasing as the modules and PhDs he leads are super competitive.

However, the guy simply cares about being cited and famous in his (sub)field and getting more grant money from big companies, and he works like 80h work-weeks for that ever since he started his PhD back in the days.

He simply wants to be the best academic because he cares about and is interested in the research he is doing. Otherwise, he would have burnt out or said "I want more family life" (cope) and take a passive teaching position.

As long as you make enough money, it is important to love what you do unless it retires you before 30-35 tbh; Any other scenario make sure the enjoyment to pay ratio is optimal; Without enjoyment, you will suffer both mentally and socioeconomically because you are at risk of underperforming compared to others who love it.

What happens is that a lot of times, if you're not moving forward, you're moving backwards srs. Your income needs to keep going up because that same dollar is worth less. Money sitting in a bank? turrible. Needs to be in the market to gain some interest. Don't want to keep your skillset up-to-date with the newest advancements in for your industry? Good luck. These young guns are coming up and they are hungry AF. Be prepared.

Rich people never feel they are rich. They are around other rich people and they might be poor compared to some people in their circle. I have nothing against people who are rich. Money is power, and how you use it is important. You don't owe anyone, but need to have a moral compass. There is a point where you have a lot of money and power, and if you choose to use it to screw someone over, you're a piece of chit.

One huge criticism Walmart has always had is they would move into a small town and squeeze out all the mom and pop businesses, and basically the whole town would go into poverty, and then numbers dropped and WM would decide the store doesn't make enough profits so they would just close the store, leaving the town with nothing. It wasn't just one or two towns, it was hundreds and they knew what they were doing.
