Your estimate of a 225lb bench on a smith

I'm at planet fitness for a few months, and here I just use their dumbbells for bench which only go up to 75. I decided to use the smith today, and was able to hit 2 plates for 4 reps after about 7 sets of progressing weight.

I know this aint a real 225, so what's your guess on what this is? I think I read smith machine takes off about 25lbs, plus there's less stabilization so you can prob bench more.

So what is it? 185? 205? 210?

Rule of thumb is to remove the first digit with Smith so you're looking at 25 lbs give or take. Nice lift!

the bar still provides some resistance on a smith though, does your machine have the 'starting resistance' written on it?

most smiths are counterweighted to a bar weight of around 10-15 pounds. Therefore 190-195.

Which is probably about 150 on a barbell.

Nah. I wasn't really looking for it though.

I was eyeballing the bar when I was doing this, and it does look slightly thinner than a normal olympic barbell

I defo dont think its this much of a difference, when I used to bench I found whatever I could do on the bar, I could do 25lbs more on the smith

If you are primarily training on a barbell and go to the smith maybe. If you are primarily training on a smith then go to a barbell you are gonna struggle for awhile.

I can see this, although thats a little drastic.. Stabilization is a big thing. I typically do regular barbell though and was doing dumbbells here
