Mindblown: Russia’s “Dead Hand” missile system or Mertvaya Ruka

They have this **** currently operating srs.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/news.ya...020000801.html
Dead Hand was a fail-safe (or rather, fail-deadly) system of launching whatever Russian nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles survived the aftermath of an American first strike. A Wired article described the system’s abilities:

“It was designed to lie semi-dormant until switched on by a high official in a crisis. Then it would begin monitoring a network of seismic, radiation, and air pressure sensors for signs of nuclear explosions.” If the information Dead Hand collected indicated a nuclear strike against the Soviet Union may have occurred, it would initiate a verification procedure.

“Before launching any retaliatory strike, the system had to check off four if/then propositions: If it was turned on, then it would try to determine that a nuclear weapon had hit Soviet soil. If it seemed that one had, the system would check to see if any communication links to the war room of the Soviet General Staff remained. If they did, and if some amount of time—likely ranging from 15 minutes to an hour—passed without further indications of attack, the machine would assume officials were still living who could order the counterattack and shut down. But if the line to the General Staff went dead, then Perimeter would infer that apocalypse had arrived.”

Once this nightmare scenario had been established, command missiles stored in hardened, nuclear-blast resistant silos would be launched all over the Soviet Union, transmitting launch sequences to whatever missiles had survived, and authorizing whoever happened to be in the silos to initiate launch and bring about nuclear armageddon.

Even if the Soviet Union’s top military commanders, politicians, leaders, cities, and capital—you name it—were smoldering piles of ash, the Soviet Union could guarantee a retaliation.
God help humanity

Awesome. Israel has something similar to guarantee the destruction of Europe if anything happens to them.

I wonder what freakish systems the US has in place.

Whats concerning with this is they are depending on this system WITHOUT human intervention. Yes the system has a protocol to verify but its all the damn computer doing all the work.

Yeah....it's called MAD, Mutually Assured Destruction

Any chess player knows & understand why this is vital to strategic thinking.

It is vital for your adversary to believe you have that capability of mutual destruction.....even if you don't.

This could be the great filter. I wonder if it is, warfare with advanced weapons I mean.

There's a chance the great filter is behind us in which case awesome, humans may actually go on to populate space/galaxies with enough time.

There's also a chance that once civilizations get advanced enough, they just take themselves out via warfare when technology makes it too easy. I pray it isn't the latter.

The best thing all of us can do is this.

1. Realize your opinion matters, you might feel like just 1 person, but what you post online and what you say legitimately makes a difference to us surviving, so be careful of what you say. If you're reading this, you're the personality type that has the capability to post online and enjoys forums/public discussion, so your opinion probably matters more than the average human.

2. Try not to ever be too extreme, don't drive people to want a legitimately bad war.

Doesn't it say that the protocol authorizes whoever happens to be in the silos to initiate launch sequences? Am I misinterpreting this because it sounds like there are people whose job it is is to sit in these bunker-silos in the event the protcol goes operational, at which point, if prompted to, they actually hit the big red button. So to speak.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

How does this blow your mind? Literally the whole cold war was about Russia vs. the USA flexing their military and not attacking because they'd wipe each other out if chit hit the fan.

This level of automation may be new. Still an interesting thread.

I hope they made some strong passwords for that system

I also wonder if this is BS, just put some stuff out, and hope nobody has the ability to fact-check it. They never said where the missiles are facing. If everyone was dead, what do they just randomly fire them everywhere? I doubt it.
