Why do we use the term transgender now as opposed to transvestite?

Serious. Both colloquially could be called "tranny" but now it is a term for transgender people as opposed to when it used to stand for transvestite about a little over a decade ago.

Transsexuals were rare and mostly gay men who "lived as a woman" before hormones and surgery. The transvestites were the AGP het men that are now nearly all the trans males. They were reviled and publicly shamed for what is typical predatory, nonconsensual AGP behavior.

Then the word "transgender" was introduced by Virginia Price right around the time the word "gender" was starting to be used interchangeably with biological sex. It took the focus off the fact that most of the transvestites (who were fast becoming nearly all trans males) were AGPers with a lesbian fetish and it corrupted language/framing to classify those rapey AGP het men as "women."
