It's crazy how Africa was the last continent colonized
Most African countries were colonized for less than a hundred years. To put that into perspective Mexico was colonized for about 300 years.
'European powers were slow to realise the benefits of claiming land in Africa but when one or two started the rest did not want to miss out. In 1884β5 the Scramble for Africa was at full speed. Thirteen European countries and the United States met in Berlin to agree the rules of African colonisation. From1884 to 1914the continent was in conflict as these countries took territory and power from existing African states and peoples.'

Yeah you're right. I always had the impression that Africa had been colonized for centuries but in fact apart from the coast it was too deadly to Europeans.

Because Mexico had gold. And lots of it. Enough gold/silver that it brought inflation to Spain after it was exported by the conquistadors and collapsed the Spanish economy.

The African empires back then were actually pretty strong from a military standpoint, that and they sold slaves to Europeans for money, goods, weapons, etc. Many european nations were perfectly fine with this arrangement. Europeans got slaves to colonize the new world, Africans got money and weapons so it worked out for everybody (kinda).
But african nations were constantly at war the whole with each other which weakened them overall. Many civils wars, tribal divisions as well. They eventually started selling skilled tradespeople as slaves and other workers who form the backbone of society so economies started to collapse and fall behind. Probably scientists as well. either that or they died trying to fight wars with other tribes. In the 1800s many countries started abolishing slavery and since this was Africa's main source of income, it basically phucked them. With the advent of industrialization, it made Africa a pretty good strategic position and since they were so weak and poor, made them an easy target for Europeans.
Basically imagine a game of Civilization and you randomly spawn among several other civilizations and you are constantly at war with them all the time. You invest every single resource and turn into military and trade for more weapons/military. You invest absolutely nothing in science/tech. While you're fighting these never ending wars for hundreds of turns, eventually some random civilization who wisely balanced their resource allocation comes along on a steamboat and is overpowered as chit. They pull up to your shore with helicopters and tanks, having discovered robotics while your ass is still creating Zulu warriors from your poverty barracks and only just discovered the alphabet. It's a bit of a grand analogy but you get the point.

This would be prior to the poles magnetic excursion of about 12,000 years ago.
The north pole would have been elsewhere.
