Lost my best buddy last week
My 8 year old Boxer named Lincoln had to cross the Rainbow Bridge last Monday on Oct. 4. He was my once in a lifetime dog who was just SO good always. Since he was a puppy, he would just look to me, hoping he was doing the right thing and knew so many different commands, cues, mannerisms, etc. The first time I took him to a dog park, he leaned against me and just watched the other dogs play, constantly looking up to make sure I was still there. He was always a maniac until the last bit of his life where he weakened and slowed down a good deal.
The Friday before he had to go, he was trying to play with me and fainted due to low red blood cell count (anemia). About a month before that, he had a tumor removed from his thyroid gland which was full encapsulated, showing no signs it had spread, so I believed I was in the clear. He developed a bad ulcer from one of his anti-inflammatory meds which caused a bunch of blood loss, requiring a transfusion but it seems like his body may not have been producing enough blood, or killing off blood that was being produced. On his last day with me, he had very labored breathing, jaundice from his liver failing, and some other things I'd rather not get into, but he just looked at me like Please Help Me. Shattered me guys. I did everything I could for him but the only way I could help him was to have a vet come over and allow him to cross. He passed away at 1:30PM with me being the last thing he saw, telling him I loved him. I cleaned him, then wrapped him in his favorite blanket, and headed to a private pet crematorium. I had it done the same day and I was the one to actually put him in there- I didn't want anyone else touching him or being rough with his body, or put into some garbage bag and freezer- was hard af to say the least but he never spent another night away from home.
While I was gone, my other Boxer walked through my house howling for hours. It's going to be a while before I can go a day without breaking down and thinking about all his little quirks. Love your pups extra tonight boys.

hit me right in the feels - especially the part about picking your boy up off the floor and carrying him yourself to the private crematorium because you didnt want anyone else to touch him in a way you didnt approve of thats exactly what i did for my boys

I'm so sorry to hear OP... its arguably one of the toughest things you'll ever go through man =/ We lost one of our family pets a few months ago and not a day goes by that I don't think about her and tell her I love her when I pass her photos on the wall in the morning. The worst part was how unexpected and fast it happened for me.. one minute they're there with you, next they're gone. Always remember how much of a good life you gave him, and the pain you feel truly means he meant the world to you man. Once again I'm sorry for your loss bro. Stay strong.

Gutted for you, OP. The only bad thing about dogs is that they never last long enough. You surely made his life as good as he made yours.

Dude I was gutted reading your post. So sorry for your loss man. I can tell from your pictures and words that you gave him the best life that he could've ever asked for and that he was spoiled and loved and that he knew it.
Please take good care of yourself and forgive, as you did the best you could. The only thing you can do now is to live a happy and fulfilling life to the fullest like he would have wanted you to.

Put my girl down a year and a half ago and still get teared up when I read stories of equal loss like this.
I have a nice shelf with her ashes, a painting a friend did, her most favorite toys and collar.
Prayers and respect brother. Hang in there.

I knew reading the thread title I didn't want to come in here, but I had to so I could tell you I am very sorry for your loss. Absolutely heart wrenching, but you did everything you could to give your pupper a good life and the best end possible.

Rip, Lincoln.
It looks like he had a good life.
It looks like he had a good life.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

Sorry to hear bro. We lost a couple great pups way too young several years ago. One was in a wheelchair and we still keep it in the same place where we last took it off of him in our house. Now we're getting to the twilight of our current pair and every new day we are equally thankful and also slightly dreading that day.

Its so tough to lose them.

May he Rest In Peace.
I too had many boxers in my life and they are great dogs. I lost a couple to cancer as they get it a lot and that was it for me. I couldn’t deal with that kind of hurt anymore.

I have a dog and i make sure i do the best i can to make sure he has a good life because i know i will have to face same thing as you op one day.
My sisters GSD died 1year ago and her English Mastiff died few months ago. Both my sis and brother-in-law took it pretty hard and are taking a break from dog ownership because of it.
