Over 40% of college students are depressed, 22% say they're "severely depressed"
Fukkin chit misc, just read this information from a survey with over 100,000 respondents for the 2020-2021 year.https://www.statista.com/statistics/...depression-us/
I've been in higher ed for 7 years, getting close to being done with dental school, and I legitimately have never considered myself "depressed" before. I watched two of my closest friends in undergrad completely ruin their lives (at least for now) because they became severely depressed.
One was a tall, jacked, charismatic, smart, computer science major that all the faculty loved - but beginning of sophomore year, he started getting high 24/7, got rejected by a girl, stopped attending all his classes, failed everything, dropped out, and spent 6 years getting a bachelors in political science. Now he constantly posts about Bernie on twitter.
The other was part of the reason I even decided to pursue dentistry. Dude would stay up til 3 in the morning every night working on physics and chemistry homework. He was a tutor, honors student, got straight As, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelors in both chemistry and physics, but became severely depressed his last semester. Went to a PhD program, hated his research and classmates, stopped going to class completely, got kicked out, was unemployed for almost a year, finally is working a decent-paying job for a chemistry company. But he could've done so much more, and I hope he does in the future.
This chit terrifies me legitimately. 1 in 4 kids in college should be having the time of their lives in college, but are "severely depressed." What's wrong with western culture that's destroying young people? I've got plenty of theories (loneliness, no belief system, debt, poor job prospects, social media, dehumanization), but it still makes me scared nonetheless.

Sucks to hear but those stories are extremely common.
I think some sort of discipline like martial arts in childhood goes a long way.

Zero sympathy for these absolute poocies srs. I've had a gut bacterial infection for 4 years where I'm chitting diarrhea, bloated like a whale, in pain 24/7 and feel like I have the flu with cold sweats freezing body and chit every fukin day. Have had 1 day of not having that in 4 years and it was due to eating literal human chit. I've even been so desperate I've eaten dog chit hoping I'd get some magic bacteria that would fix it.
And even I don't get depressed aside from when the disease makes me incredibly ill. I never get depressed that 'life is boring' or whatever these fairies come up with.
These physically healthy ****g0ts and their absolutely fukin pathetic problems make me laugh srs.

I can believe that. They got an overload of information and don't know where to divert their attention to.

It's internet/pron/social media addiction. Simple as that.

And this is the future workforce. 2/5 people claiming disability because they are "depressed". Companies had better buckle up for claims through the roof.

- no higher purpose due to West's lack of religion
- don't know how to socialize IRL and social media is not a substitute, social media makes them mentally ill from information overload/comparing lives to top 1%
- for men, less to look forward to. no aspiration to have a family as they don't know how to pick up women IRL, and online dating is now 95/5 rule or even 99/1 rule
- for men, the feminist/gynocentric brainwashing that happens in college drains the manly life force out of them
- too much weird internet pr0n depleting their dopamine
- clown world with no end in sight is depressing
- less physical activity
- less outdoor activity
- poor nutrition
- poor hormones from poor nutrition
- belief that the current system is failing the common man, house prices/inflation of everything including college tuition itself out of control
- etc.

I'd guess its mainly due to social isolation. Next to that, school and life is hard, where the "lows" lasts far longer the "highs".
Money is also tight with huge expenses for rent and school, and not enough optimism in the future to make up for it.
Social media is also used in a way to connect to others, but makes the users feel like chit and rejected due to all the updates on stuff they are not in on

The problem with a survey like this is new information.
On the surface, it seems like the numbers are so much higher than they were when I was younger, but the fact is that people would have just rejected the idea of depression twenty or thirty years ago because of the stigma and lack of information on the subject.
So most people would have just answered negatively.
Today, every Gen Z kid worshipping at the altar of social media victimhood has self-diagnosed themselves with anxiety, depression, and a host of other maladies. So of course they're all depressed... just like they're all bisexual and changed their pronouns.

But also a LOT of employers unwilling or unable to increase the wages they are paying and not willing to accept that people won't work for that anymore because a burger and fries is now $8 - $10 and rent on a one bedroom is $1300 - $1500.
Man Applies For 60 Jobs- Gets 1 Interview
Two weeks and 28 applications later, he had just nine email responses, one follow-up phone call, and one interview with a construction company that advertised a full-time job focused on site cleanup paying $10 an hour.
But Holz said the construction company instead tried to offer Florida's minimum wage of $8.65 to start, even though the wage was scheduled to increase to $10 an hour on September 30. He added that it wanted full-time availability, while scheduling only part time until Holz gained seniority.

That apparently is what happened to one of my nephews. In HS he tested as one of the best students in the nation. He won a nice scholarship. And then found himself majorly depressed from school He left that school and I'm not sure if he is attending an online University still or not. Good, smart kid, just couldn't handle the University.

Good points all around in this thrad.
For young men, it's usually about girls and money. They get utterly defeated by the quest for them both and the cold realities of them. I was the same way back in the 90's.
It's also the lack of basic respect they get from Corporate America and Colleges and the Government. You are basically their little bitch these days due to your dependency on them to live and not be homeless.

I think people are just getting more depressed in general, not just college students. Would also depend on baselines or other surveys/studies to compare it to. post-secondary education can be pretty stressful depending on what you major in. sometimes people have some existential crisis like "wtf am I doing here, wasting all this money, for something I don't actually enjoy, am I really going to get a job out of this?". I think this probably is more true today with a lot of uncertainty.
honestly I've had bouts where I would just become depressed, lethargic, low-energy for no apparent reason. i think there's some genetic pre-dispositions to it or just simply hormonal/chemical imbalances. but I think things like social media and tech feed a lot into that. sometimes I feel like just unplugging everything and live in the phucking woods hunting deer, chopping logs and fishing. at least to get away from it all and have it serve as a distraction.
a dutch study recently correlated better mental health status the less you watch the news. all that doom and gloom chit aint good for ya, although it is probably true we are going down the chitter right now. just gotta stay positive brahs.

I hated all of school, though my grades were decent. In college the feeling of being a financial burden on my family and the thought of debt stressed me out.
Now that I'm working and making decent money life is good. I feel bad for all the people who rack up a ton of debt and are even worse off after they graduate.
The whole thing is a scam anyway, they shouldn't be allowed to hand out loans you can't declare bankruptcy on like it's candy to kids, for insane amounts of money sometimes.
And all of that's not even getting into how useless the bulk of what you have to study in college is anyway.
