Children and terminal illness.
Another thread made me think about this, but didn't want to bring down and clutter the other thread. Srs question though; Is it better to tell a kid he's dying then do a bunch of stuff for him to feel better about dying, or do you not tell him and just take him on adventures and get real joy from the experience?
Grew up with a kid that was told he was going to die, then didnt. Was totally ****ed up from being told he was going to die as a kid and was able to grow up and tell the story. To this day he ain't right in the head. Granted, he also could have been messed up in the head from being over protected and given anything he wanted by both his parents and the fact that he was awarded millions from the misdiagnosis, but it's still something that lingers in my mind to this day.
Scenario; Your child develops a terminal illness. Consider ages 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 16. What ages would or wouldn't you tell them? Explain please. Having children I can't even say if I would. It's a call that no parent ever wants to make.

Kids are smart and perceptive, and there are ways to handle the process of dying that is age appropriate. I think that children need consistent information that is as honest as possible and there isn't an age too young that I would tell them. I am approaching this from a perspective of being given difficult information as a child and having parts of it kept from me because child. It's silly. Kids are resilient and it's our job to prepare them.
Can someone make a thread about puppies next?

Sorry to be so grim. Life is full of bad people and horrible suffering. Death is a part of us as humans.
Mr Rogers talked about death too. He knew that if we didn't talk about it, that we would be more afraid of it. We are all in this together, and we must all realize that it's part of what makes us human.

Hard to say and depends on the intuition of the child.
My oldest is 9, and she would know something was wrong. I'd probably explain the situation but with optimism. I would never just flat out tell my kids "you are going to die" nor would I believe it. I'd believe they could make even if we were freefalling to our supposed deaths.
My youngest is 3, and I wouldn't even mention it at all to her.

I have watched a movie like that. A kid is terminally ill and two brothers try to keep him happy.
That movie messed me and my generation up so bad probably noone here could tell the kid that

R8. Both are mine.
Cat (Dory) is 1 and the dog (Suzy) is 11.

Best buddy from high school lost a 4-year-old daughter to cancer. That was several years ago and I don't remember what they told her. They did everything, chemo, radiation, surgery. Cancer went into remission and then came back about 10 months later. Tried experimental treatments at that point, but they knew they were going to lose her. By the end their daughter was done - didn't want to fight anymore. But they did get a chance to make some wonderful memories in the meantime.
Just thinking about it right now, I would probably let a child know that things were serious but try to stay positive. Medicine is always getting better and very view diagnoses have absolutely no hope. Even if there was a small chance I would try to stay positive, both to them and inwardly. Then just make the best of whatever time we have.

That's exactly it. He talked about death so that children could understand what was going on. They deserve to be respected and told what will happen, IMO.
And thank you for the pic

10/10, srs. No good girls are anything less. Do they cuddle or merely tolerate one another?

Sick kids and pets dying..my brain just goes Nope and leaves the room. Have no idea how a person can tell a kid that they will die or how the kid might comprehend it.

Pay one of those animation companies that will make a animated ad for you
Bit just have the cartoon tell the kid he’s dying instead of selling a product
That way it’s more palatable
And just let the kid rot playing as much Nintendo switch as he wants
