Boxing Sparring Question
I don’t know how many miscers have experience boxing. But I recently returned to boxing, I’ve been going 5 days a week for the past month. I boxed when I was younger on and off but I never did any full sparring, as far as that type of thing goes it was mainly body work.
Anyhow today I did my first real sparring, I train at a well respected gym the coach is well respected. I am 5’7 and about 180lbs fairly lean. I was put in the ring with a guy who was 6’1-6’2 and about 240lbs. He’s a HW, not only much bigger than me but also much more experienced.
The sparring went fine for my first time, but it kinda of turned into a “gym war”, I hip tossed him to the ground from a clinch. But he was slugging at me with bad intentions and I didn’t throw a punch at more than 50% at any point. I was able to make it out with just a bloody nose surprisingly.
My question is, is that normal for the coach to have someone like me who would probably cut weight to Super Middleweight (168lbs) do hard sparring with a much more experienced HW?

When a beginner spars someone more experienced who's going all out, the beginner doesn't learn how to box. he simply tries to survive.
You were fodder.

My main question was how normal is to have someone in the ring who walks around at 180lbs vs someone who walks around at 240lbs? Is that a normal procedure? I never saw Canelo sparring HWs. When someone is 6 inches taller than you, 60lbs heavier, has a longer reach, and is more experienced I don’t really see the point of doing that in sparring. Like you said it’s almost like you are trying to survive.

When I was seriously boxing I was 165 lbs at 5' 8. I'd go in the ring with literally everyone. I had big guys trying to knock me out, they were mostly out of shape beginners. The big guys that are good know not to throw haymakers on someone half their weight out of decency and respect. Anyway, when I ended up with an ******* like that I'd make him chase me around the ring and just practice dodging their punches. They'd usually be gassed a round in. It's always good practice to spar. Just use your head and don't stand toe to toe with a guy like that. Make him chase you until he gives up. If someone give you chit they don't know anything about boxing and they can go rot.

The pros often spar with guys much larger than themselves. GGG brought cruiserweights into his camp. Canelo sparred heavyweight Frank Sanchez. Pacquiao sparred middleweights to prepare for Spence. That’s not abnormal. It does seem weird to throw a regular gym goer into the ring with someone like that though.

Definitely a lot different compared to MMA.I'm sure it's normal if the heavyweight holds back. Some boxers can be a lot taller with longer reach so it's a thing to practice againist. I'm sure i could spar tyson fury with my manlet ass and be way better off than sparring some middle weight amateur.
Why? Because tyson fury wouldn't wreck me. He'd educate me. Meanwhile some bigger amateur guy might think every spar is his world title fight and beat me up.
Some people are bullies who want to knock out a beginner. Some people get mad or emotional etc.
If you want to be more safe, just spar someone your own size next time. As for canelo, he's something else. But even canelo wouldn't spar deontay wilder if wilder was out for blood.

It can be very normal but it's the sign of a bad gym/bad coach.
Basically you find some scumbag coaches that basically just want an body [you] their preferred students can wail on. "Gym Wars" shouldn't be happening with a guy who never sparred before. It's the coaches job to recognize that and to tell the more experienced guy to hold back or to stop the sparring session altogether.
Also, don't be afraid to speak up. If someone is going too hard on you, you should say, "Hey lighten up". Don't be a dosser and hip toss them.

As I was being hit it was like someone was turning the lights on and off really fast, I almost didn’t have time to get my hands up to where I wanted to them and I don’t have the head movement or footwork to avoid shots yet.
