After dinner last night (homemade wheat bread with fixins) I got my flash light to go close up the chicken coops as per usual. But oh misery! One of then hens with six babies was not in her bucket shelter. I searched all around in the dark with my flash light, remembering the sound of hawks from earlier in the afternoon and feeling the worst as I pictured the valorous death of the hen as she battled the multiple hawks to try to keep her babies alive. Roosters are usually celebrated as defenders, but mostly hens do the actual battles. Anyway, there was no body, no feathers. My clothes were full of burs and I was cold and sad. I saw some blue eyes staring at me from the brush and I advanced asking the critter, "Did you kill my hen?" It ran away and at first I pictured a nasty raccoon but later I thought it might be Edwardo, the pandemic stray cat who I tried to take inside. Edwardo ended up being so wild that he threw turds ten feet from his litter box like Tom Brady wants to throw a hail mary pass. He was my cat for months, but he vanished only to show up on my neighbor's door step a few weeks later. Treacherous little slut! Anyway, I couldn't find my hen so I went to sleep with a sad hole in my heart. This morning, she popped out of her hiding place! She hadn't roosted in her usual spot because she had gotten locked into a little yard. The end.

repped. Yes. They get torn apart so often. Literally shredded by those damn raccoons. I shot a possum a few days ago. They aren't as bad, but they still account for some of the deaths. Hawks are also just awful. I don't like killing critters but it's a case of kill or be killed. I guess if a real war breaks out I'll have a tiny chance. Raccoons are by far the nastiest.

Should just hang life size photos of yourself on all sides of the coop. No predator would dare to go near...

One of my neighbors made the most bizarre scare crow using a large doll of the pink power ranger on a stick. lol! Every time I drove past his garden I just laughed. It looked ridiculous. nothing works on raccoons though. Fukkin scum. absolute worst animals. online all the hippies say "awww so cute..." when they see that variety of varmint. I'm like, get the critter gun, you idiots, before it eats your dog and cat! Then everyone says i'm cruel and they talk about conservation- as if there weren't an over abundance of them.

Elevate 4' high to avoid dogs, don't use if there is a chance of killing a cat.


If cats are around, gat a half dozen dog proof foothold traps. ****** will be alive, unharmed and waiting for you in the morning.

You can decide to relocate or pop them. Fun fact, ****** meat is good, and there is actually a market for it down where you are.

You could take care of your ****** problem in a few nights with 6 dogproof traps. Use dogfood for bait, and put a golf ball on top of the trap too keep mice out.

Hutrapper beat me to the trapping advice and I'm sure he knows what he's doing better than me. We had raccoons in our corn a couple times this summer and picked up several of these:



That's a dog proof raccoon trap like Hutrapper referenced. Raccoons never came back though before we harvested the corn. Growing up we never had raccoons but did have a lot of red foxes. Don't see the foxes much anymore but the raccoons are thick. We see coyotes more often too now.

That looks like a Duke brand dogproof. I have many, they work fine. Never any leg damage, a very humane trap.

The best trick is to put that golf ball on top, and the mice leave the bait alone. The ****** just knocks it off, and it actually attracts them as they sometimes think it is an egg. Ithink they also have a pull only trigger, which further prevents a cat paw or dogs tongue from getting caught.

That looks like it will work. We have large packs of coyotes. I see their poops a lot around the barn and coops. Foxes like me. We have red and gray. They and other critters approach me at certain times. Lots of wildlife. Turkeys, deer, pigs.

Coyotes are harder to trap.

The ****** dog proofs are for ****** only... I think maybe the odd possum gets caught in them too.

I had raccoons coming in my garage to eat dog food through the dog door.

The only thing that kept them out was booming Religious talk radio.

They finally over came that and the pellet rifle ended it.



I would catch the skunks in a trap and wrap them in a tarp so they wouldn't spray me and put them in a trash can full of water.

This. I've never caught a skunk in a dog proof, but it does happen. I prefer to set traps a little distance away from the house, just in case. There are lots of youtube vids that can get you started.

god fearing raccoons! I got a kick out of that. I've caught just about every sort of critter that one can catch. I won't hurt dogs, cats, foxes, coyotes. For a while I wanted to avoid the nastiness of having to kill anything, but the game warden got sick of me real quick. It's his damn job though. I guess i got mean again and i don't seem bothered. it's just a simple chore like any other.
