Target is having a buy two get one free deal on books, so I'm looking to stock up. I'm mostly into philosphy/psychology, some biographies, and some works of fiction. Specifically fiction that has a broader message about society and the human condition. However if you know of a book that goes beyond those genres and is a must-read, post it here and I'll check it out. my only stipulation is no gay chit.

Deep work and so good they can’t ignore you by cal Newport were favourites for me
I’ve read all the classics like 7 habits, and how to win friends and influence people. They are just okay.
Anything written by Atul Gawande ie: checklist manifesto, better, complications

The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara

A Civil War novel about the four days of the battle at Gettysburg focusing on Chamberlain, Buford, Lee, and Longstreet. Immersive depiction of “civil war” and why men fought brothers and friends. Won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1974.


Breath by Tim Winton

Winton described it as a reflection on youth; risk taking, the feeling immortality and hurting oneself and hurting others without noticing. Framed along the backdrop of big wave surfing off the south coast of Western Australia. Dark with some uncomfortable situations but beautifully written.

One of my favorite quotes on surfing is from this book: “How strange it was to see men do something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant, as though nobody saw or cared.”


A Walk in The Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson

Bryson’s typical humor carries his account of his attempt to hike the AT from Georgia to Maine as an inexperienced, middle aged, overweight, recently repatriated American.


Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

This classic Christian apologetics book was compiled from four BBC radio broadcasts Lewis gave during World War II. The four parts: The Law of Human Nature, What Christians Believe, Christian Behavior, and Beyond Personality. He discusses the virtues of faith, the value of marriage, the Trinity and three-Personal life, and the relationship of Christianity to psychology.

In reference to Atlas Shrugged, the only negative I have I guess is that it is overwritten. You can tell it was written by a woman. Every time the story shifts characters and scenes Ayn would have to describe in great details of the room/weather/what everyone in the story was wearing ect ect. If she cut out all the useless depth into details of literally everything I have no doubt the book could have been 25% shorter.
