When did trucks become luxury vehicles?

Looking at prices of new pickups nowadays they're right up there with Euro luxury SUVs. Growing up trucks were for utility around the farm, hunting, off roading, etc. I'd be afraid to take a Sierra Denali at 70K + to the woods or whatever in fear of scratching it. I have a 2013 Titan that's bare bones (although I've added improvements to the sound system, running boards, etc) that I don't really fear that with. When did these trucks become high end luxury vehicles?

Ask that to the greedy auto industry capitalist overlords. I bet it's literally "just because" they wanted to raise up the prices for trucks and the easiest way to do it was to add more "luxury" and gadgets.

trucks have been getting nicer and nicer over time as demand for them as risen

simply put, trucks are more luxurious and comfortable to ride around in than most "luxury cars". A Sierra Denali is going to have a more comfortable ride than just about any BMW (asides from maybe an X7 or something)

Tradies, men in construction, farmers etc make pretty damn good money, so naturally there’s a market for luxury trucks.
"The flowers bloom, then wither... The stars shine and one day become extinct. This earth, the sun, the galaxies and even the big universe, someday will be destroyed. Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

It's damn near impossible to find non luxury trucks with the good engine and 4wd. I don't care about sunroofs, tons of electronics or leather but good luck trying to find one like that

What's really happened is they've added useless things like crotch-A/C(yes that's a thing) and other electric garbage

They've driven the cost to manufacturer vehicles up so high that they have no choice but to sell it higher

When people saw it as some kind of penis extension/status symbol. Sloots seem to love driving these things to take kids to school in suburbia.

It is mostly a symptom of retardation since the platform is horribly compromised from a performance pov and probably why so many 'mericans have them.

It started when Ford came out with the sub miniature 5' bed and crew cab combination. All of a sudden a truck wasn't just a vehicle for people who needed to haul stuff, it was also a car with a missing trunk lid. From there they just kept adding luxury options.

This. I'm in Houston and the nearest long bed, 4x4, V8 work truck is in Kentucky. They want $2500 over sticker for it.

It is pretty lol when you consider the difference between older trucks versus the comfy cabin trucks we are seeing in recent years. I know a lot of boomers and boomer-minded guys who drive older pickups because they aren't fans of the midsize pickups with 10 inch display and premium JBL sound system when air conditioned seats that go for 60-70k

My 2016 lariat rides incredibly smooth . I’d attribute some of it to the wheelbase , as the frames are fairly long when you have four doors .
Lots of creature comfort’s too, like heated steering wheel and seats , plus air conditioned seats .
It’s much different from my 84 . You couldn’t drink a cup of coffee in it , because it would squirt threw the hole in the lid and hit the roof liner as you hit a bump

Present vehicle

I should have kept this regardless though , as it was a hobby working on it . It really needed a better set of front springs , as I’ve ridden in other short wheel base GMC’s with 6” lifts that were much smoother .
Also the 305 should have been replaced with an LS6 454 . The additional weight up front really helps the ride quality when their lifted

There are still plenty non-luxury more basic trucks on the road. Most people don't want them though. Since its just a really small market manufacterers really don't make 'that' many of them. If you check at dealerships that do business with oilfield companies and other companies that buy a lot of single cab fleet trucks you can find some really good deals.

I have a GMC Sierra 1500 right now. Eventually I'd like to get my hands on a single cab diesel 4x4 F250 for towing boats/hunting/work. And switch to either a Bronco or Wrangler for city/daily use. (Girlfriend drives luxury SUV's so that's covered for road trips).

Unfortunately Covid fukked us and finding one lightly used for a decent price is hard.

Unless you're driving a high performance car driving a lifted truck is the most enjoyable driving experience. Drove a buddies F350 with a high lift and 48" tires. Damn near felt like driving a semi truck on the road. Visibility over all the other vehicles is amazing.
