Preparedness bros rate latest purchase/10



Ten 3.5 gallon water bricks. This is a ~7 day supply for our family including animals.

Why not a 55 gallon barrel? Most emergency scenarios we would be sheltering at another location nearby, so I want portability. Plus I can store these under beds etc vs taking up space in the garage where neighbors can see what I've got.

They aren't cheap but they have a number of things going for them stackability, portability etc. Full each weighs ~30 lbs so my wife can even move them.

From my own poking about online the western portion of NC looks most promising for any miscers looking for this type of property.

I like that they are square and easy to store OP, but I do wonder what makes them superior to the square-ish jugs you can buy at the grocery store. As I understand it those can be re-used. You just have to put a bit of bleach in the water.

I watch a fair amount of off grid/tiny house videos and this seems to be a constant in most homes.

You can reuse any food grade plastic container, although if it previously held food or another beverage (milk etc) you have to sanitize the crap out of them to get any food particles off of them, and most things I've read say it's not worth the effort when you can just use actual water gallons instead.

I don't see any reason regular gallon jugs wouldn't work, but the lids are kind of crappy for a long term storage situation.

EDIT: we also do lots of camping/outdoor activities so I think these will see use outside of emergency/prep scenarios too.

Those Big Berkeys (filter you pictured) are legit.

Goes in the bathtub so you have a giant balloon full of water stored in your tub, fills right from the tub. It's cheap and ridiculously portable (when not filled) too.

Just a little public service announcement - The plastic in milk jugs doesn't hold up long term. People that try to use them for storage often have them burst and leak. The clear plastic jugs that apple juice come in are fine. I'm sure there are others, I just know to stay away from milk jugs.

Cool purchase though, I'm going to look into them. I live rural, with a private well and when the power is out, so is the water.

Can confirm, I have one of those bathtub ones. That and I live a few miles from the great lakes so fresh water hopefully will never be a concern.

You might want to check this out. Besides solar/batteries you may be able to set up some type of wind power. Cool stuff in this video, but I will try to cue it up to the part where he shows his wind turbine system which he uses to power the pumps for his hydroponic grow setup.

10/10, Those water bricks look great. And like you said, they’re easier to carry and more practical for portability.

I also like the idea of not being limited to storing them in a garage where people can see. That’s one thing we talked about when storing our supplies is how we prefer it not be visible to other people.

Just took a quick look, but those turbines are sweet. I'll go back and watch it better when I have a few minutes. We always do a big garden. My wife has been trying to get a walipini on my "to do" list. Fresh tomatoes in February would be awesome.

I'm pretty conscious about that stuff yeah. I just purchased a new firearm and waited until dark to bring it into the house etc. There's no leverage in making a big deal out of what you've got. Even on here I try to be circumspect about certain parts of what we have.

I'm hardly a prepper/end of the world guy, just ready for most emergencies. However, something like 53% of Americans don't have enough supplies to last THREE DAYS off the grid - things could get western in a hurry.

Mm don’t really understand the need tbh.

I keep like 8-10 5gallon jugs just for my water machine at house.

For portability I just have my filter and two jugs and I have multiple bladders with water filters built into them. Never saw the practicality in trying to lug around more then 1 days worth of water. You need to find a source as a #1 priority other then that and setup camp by river or whatever.

But I’m surrounded by woods and water so idk.

this arrived just yesterday for me

I don't think there's anything wrong with emergency water rations, I used to keep some of the ones with the 5 year lifespan. But for a family of 4 humans and 2 animals it gets cost prohibitive - the little pouch ones worked out like $20/day. If all you need is enough for you and some for the whores you'll be sheltering I wouldn't worry about it.

Those little camp stoves are a great purchase - we use ours for cookouts at the beach, camping etc too so it's not just a survival tool

Those 5 gallon water machine jugs are a great solution but what's the lifespan on them? FDA says 2 years for regular old bottled water. I like the idea of having empty containers I can load up if I sense the need. We would be relocating to an area that has potable water and a filtration solution - this more than covers the time to travel there, plus storage solution when we get there.

Good stuff to be aware of. I grew up rural, then took my first job in a city, then moved back home a few years ago. Built a house on the corner of a field that my dad owns (he still farms). I love living in the country - I have a little mounded hill of dirt I can shoot 22s into at the back of my yard. But earlier this year we lost power for half a day or so. Houses with private wells have a hydropneumatic tank included in the water system. Water is incompressible so without the tank the well would have to start every time someone opened a tap, which would be bad for the well motor. The tank allows for some storage under pressure. However, when the power went out, I found out that storage was about 1 or 2 toilet flushes. I still like living in the country, but there's a lot to be said for having water when the power is out. Sewer is gravity flow, at least on the main floor, so that is not as much of an issue.

Hand pump is an option that I've looked at installing in the well. A generator would be ideal.
