What makes good managers good?
Includes supervisors, foremen and other bosses
Do they plan for second rate results,
Or using the people they manage, the job is perfectly done no matter what?

In my opinion, it is when they know what they are doing and have good interpersonal skills.

Depends on the job. Interpersonal skills or technical skills are pretty key. Not micromanaging. Obviously a person that can solve any problem with ease, due to experience.

At least in my role - breaking down roadblocks that prevent me from doing my job, being clear with goals/expectations, allowing me to work autonomously (don't ****ing micromanage me), and assisting with career advancement.
Managers are essential for business but depending on the industry and organization certain styles work best and a manager has to determine what best works for each of his/her individual contributors reporting to them.

-Advocates for his own team members within the company. If someone from another dept gives me chit for something that's not my fault, a good manager steps in and sets the record straight, putting his own reputation on the line. Bad managers are too concerned with making themselves look good and kowtowing to ****gy office politics.

I've had plenty of white women exactly that way though. With others as her subordinates she may not be taken serious or seen as a pushover, but she probably hires based on people she figures won't do that. She gives respect and it's reciprocated

It’s also a lot of knowing the individuals on your team and understanding their motivations, and knowing their strengths and weaknesses.
I think every manager should have an overarching philosophy of how their team should operate, and adapting the game plan to fit the individuals to succeed in that philosophy.

This is why you are all depressed, you're to busy thinking about work which has no real meaning accept to pay you so you can provide for your family. Sure, if you are a doctor saving lives or building people homes great, but for 90% us we are just hamsters spinning our wheels.
Just be good towards people and foster great relationships with your family and friends, you will be happier.

Hire good people. Give them the tools and freedom to do good work. Compensate properly and recognize their achievements. Allow them input into project decisions. Etc.
All common sense stuff, really. Be the manager you'd like to have if you were in their shoes.

Everything that makes a good manager good, in my opinion, falls underneath these 2 main things:
1) they maketheirmanagers’ jobs easier
2) they make the workers below them into better workers
How do you do #1? You get work done on time, with quality, and without needing to be spoonfed. And then #2 Is going to benefit the company overall. Facilitate for your workers. Check on their work every now and then, when you see they need improvement somewhere set up a meeting with them and teach them by example. Frame it as though youre setting them up for promotion. “If you want to get promoted in 1-2 years, or a better job somewhere else, heres what you need to do. And here’s how to do it.”

Good managers allow & compensate self-starters on a performance-basis.
If employees have no ownership/creation over what they're doing, they dgaf.

Good communication. I really liked my last managers a lot partly because I could count on them to tell me:
- any upper level stuff going on that was going to directly impact us at the store level
- what shipments were expected, and roughly when
- what work they wanted prioritized [regular tasks, special projects, etc.]

Ownership - if your team screws up, it's your fault.
Communication. Communication. Communication.
Lack of ego - if you and I always agree, one of us isn't necessary. Give my your ideas for how to do things better, but if I don't change protocol you don't get to run up the pirate flag and just go your own way. When we're deciding a course of action, give me all your ideas and argue for what's best, UNTIL we decide a course of action, after which you need to get with the plan.
Consistent feedback and helping your team succeed.
Be more concerned with being effective than with everyone getting along. 99% of the time, effectiveness means getting along, but you can't avoid important/painful conversations.

Treating everyone as individuals. You cannot manage everyone the same way. Some people learn and work differently and you have to adjust to that.

Biggest one is them being selfless and advocating for your promotion opportunities rather than being a selfish dick. A good manager should be able to to hire talented replacements for you, so the loss of a top talent is actually a good opportunity to show you can hire effectively. If you just hire any random idiot without careful selection then you're just a sht manager.
Unlike all you socialist communists who hate working, there are people out there who want to create value for an organzation, and a good manager will recognize that value and work on the fast track for a promotion or higher pay. I've been able to figure out who are the bottom feeders are in my career and never hire them.
