Crypto.com does not have an exchange for US citizens, in case that affects your decision (I believe they want to release one sometime in the next 6-12 months, but nobody really knows)
Coinbase Pro is what I recommend due to low fees. Wait the 5-10 day holding period after buying, and then transfer to your regular Coinbase wallet (or Crypto.com wallet which is promising due to it's Earn feature that allows you to earn 5-10% APY while holding your assets)

If only there was a mega thread in bb.com that outlined the basics in the OP...

I use Coinbase and its fine, it works and has relatively low fees. But it is confusing to explain to people and that slows down mass adoption of crypto.

Different exchanges have access to different tokens and they can hold and secure your coins for you. Depending on the exchange you may need to be on multiple to get access to the more obscure tokens. Kucoin for example has a lot of small market cap tokens (think earlier investment opportunities).
If you want to use a decentralized exchange where you can swap tokens for another and really get access to the obscure stuff you'll need your own wallet like Metamask which allows you go to to websites like Uniswap and swap for things which usually means buying ETH on an exchange, sending it to your MM wallet and then swapping it for something else.
Then there are NFTs that you can buy on NFT exchanges and hold in your personal wallet.
Then there are different staking opportunities which basically means locking your tokens sometimes for a forced period of time to earn rewards.
Then there is crypto loaning/borrowing/futures/etc

most people have multiple centralized exchanges / fiat ramps that they use. I use coinbase, crypto.com and a few other centralized exchanges. I also keep 90% of my funds on a self-custodial wallet so I can interact with decentralized finance where the real money is made.
