any hunters here care to answer me this?

Went shooting my first live game today with my air rifle. shot a pidgeon, missed the head and winged it so it fell to the ground and just walked around a bit. I went up closer and put a pellet through it's head. it stopped moving but was still breathing it looked like? i put a second one straight through it's head again. still breathing though but nothing else was going on, i picked it up and it was motionless

Eventually i got a rock and crushed it's head because i assumed it was still alive and suffering? or was i wrong? i used a 177 air rifle approx 10lb/ft

bit upsetting to think it was still alive even after being headshotted twice

Just reflexes. Sometimes they breath a while. Sometimes they flap around.
Raised pigeons and shot plenty of the wild ringtailed ones.
The raised ones I'd just twist their heads off after breaking their necks. It was over quick.

Tastes good. The meat is dark, meminds me of beef in a lot of ways. There isn't much to the legs and wings, the beeast is a good size. Makes a good stew.

Last wild ones I got were eating cherries in the cherry tree. Popped them with the pellet rifle through the skylight in the kitchen. Got 2 in about an hour. Both headshots.

Look like these ones.

Unless you hit the brain stem and separate brain from body, what's left of the brain will try to keep the body alive. No different from a pigeon to a pig to a deer to a person. It wasn't suffering, that was just reflexive.

Shot about 30 Partridge this season. Some Flap around, some drop immediately, some will fly 19 yards with 1/2 a head missing. etc.. you just never know. I hunt birds with a Mossberg 500, so it's lights out pretty quick for the bush chickens.
