Ocarina and Majora 1st
ALTTP very close second
Twilight Princess + Wind Waker after...still epic games

Haven't played much of BotW but found it kinda boring. Weapons break, cook food, run out of stamina, 10000 shrines, no dungeons, barely any music at all, etc.
Gonna give it another go, though. Just felt like Skyrim with Zelda graphics, but I didn't get far at all. Don't care for Skyrim either, it just feels so bland.

it has some of the best dungeons imo.

with the motion controls you just have to be more deliberate with your sword swings, waiting for an opening, swing at the right angle, etc

Ocarina of Time and Majora's mask are all I ever played. But even I know that Ocarina of Time is actually the greatest game ever made, ever.

Wind waker
Majoras mask
Links awakening
OOT
Minish cap
Twilight Princess

I recognize OOT as the most significant title but that's my preference.

I haven't played skyward sword yet or the newest one but the newest one doesn't appeal to me I don't need another open world of boredom, I hope when I do play it it surprises me.

For their own sake I hope they have some of the same developers as were on BOTW or something to justify just how much they blatantly pull from it.

Interesting - I think you're the only one that doesn't have OOT on their list at all.

Not a lot of people mentioning Twilight Princess either which is also interesting to me - While I still liked that game I'd have to say TP overall was probably my least favorite standard issue Zelda game that I've played.

I never felt the urge to explore in TP like I did with most other Zelda titles. The dungeons and temples were all great and the best part of the game, but the open environment wasn't for me. Also, even by Zelda standards, some of the characters in that game are WAY too fruity (mail man, the chicken "dude" at lake Hylia, etc). I also didn't really like that they spent 90% of the game hyping up Zant as the main antagonist, only to switch him out for the usual suspect Ganon at the last second.

Midna was probably the best "sidekick" character they ever had though.

the top spot will always be the original: 1986 The Legend of Zelda

The feels as a boy of 6, popping that game in for the first time. An open world? explore wherever the fuk you want? My mind was blown. Entire weekends spend wandering around. Finding level 8 dungeon long before I was ready... finding the White Sword in a cave about the waterfall....
Hunting for that damn level 7 dungeon...
Stumbling across the power bracelet early one Saturday and now having the shortcut caves at my disposal...

The newer ones might be worlds better, but nothing will ever match that feeling.

Yeah I am actually surprised by how many people still rank OoT as the best, I would have ranked it in my top 5 about 10-15 years ago but I just think those N64 era Zelda games haven't aged nearly as well as the old 2D classics these days. To me Wind Waker is still my top 3D Zelda game as it's just got a timeless look and feel to it that has aged very well, and it's still a unique experience that I consider one of the most appealing as far as 3D action/adventure games are concerned, at least from an exploration and polish standpoint. The game is just remarkably packed full of things to find yet so full of personality at every corner. BotW did the same thing in many ways but I just feel like Wind Waker managed to standout over it, probably due to the way you are sailing around as opposed to just walking around or riding horseback.

To be honest I would probably rate Twilight Princess above the N64 Zeldas these days, and it used to be my least favorite Zelda game. I just remember not liking it at all when I played it on the Wii back in the day, it wasn't until I got the HD remaster on the Wii U and gave it another chance that I started to like it. The problem I got with the N64 games is probably down to how I was really into Playstation during that PS1/N64 era, it was by far my favorite console at the time and I didn't get a N64 until kinda late in it's life cycle. So I was never really into games like OoT or MM growing up, by the time I played them I was probably also getting into the Dreamcast so they were already a bit dated looking to me. Like don't get me wrong, I always thought OoT was a really charming game, but what I found most appealing about it back in the day was how open it was, how you had a whole world to wander around and explore, but that's something that has been heavily improved upon over the years that most games since have been designed around.

Personally I have always ranked Majora's Mask as one of my least favorite Zelda games, at least when it comes to the mainline games by Nintendo. It just always felt like a weird game to me, an oddly dark Zelda entry, and the whole time mechanic was something that I didn't like about it either. Plus I know I was into Dreamcast or maybe even PS2 by the time I played it so the graphics just always looked kinda crappy to me as well. The 3DS remasters of these games made them better to look at, probably the best way to play them these days, but I can tell how nostalgia plays a large part in why so many people seem to hold them to such high regard.

So when I look back upon the classic 2D games, they are just timeless to me. Games that I could play no matter where I was or what the times were like and manage to enjoy and appreciate. They're just standout and inspirational games, total classics to me that have stood the test of time better than most games.

1. Link to the Past and none of the others come close (Tho some of the others are top tier games, for sure). It has nostalgia going for it, but also I've replayed the Zelda games as an Adult and none of them really hold a candle to it imo.

2. Ocarina of Time (too much nostalgia connected to this to put it any lower)
3. Zelda II: The adventures of link. I still ****ing enjoy this game boyos. The soundtrack is ingrained in my psyche like no other.

4. Twilight Princess
5. The Legend of Zelda
6. Wind Waker

Majora's Mask can **** right off, so can Skyward Sword.

Haven't played BOTW, but as it's an open world game, I can't imagine it'd rank very high for me.

It's interesting that you point out that MM was a particularly dark/moody entry in the Zelda series, because I would kind of argue that Twilight Princess is a very close second in that regard.

If you didn't like OOT then I'd be very, very surprised if you would have said you liked MM. From what I know, MM is literally the same exact OOT game engine & resources with a new map and items. I can see how the time mechanic can be obnoxious or make some people feel anxious, when I was a kid I think I felt like that a little while playing it. Replaying it as I've gotten older, similar to the sailing mechanic in WW, I appreciate it a little bit now as a way of expanding and diversifying the game in a unique way.

I think even if OOT didn't have the nostalgia appeal to me, it'd still be in my top 3. IMO they just nailed everything about that game, the atmosphere/music/quest/characters, just a no-frills well put together game.
