Black homeowners "erase" themselves - price goes up by 500k
Black couple SUE real estate agency after their Bay Area home was valued at just $995,000 - but $1.42m when they removed all photos and asked a white friend to pose as its owner for viewing with second expert
Paul Austin 45, and his wife Tenisha Tate Austin, 42, say they believe race was the reason their home in Marin City in the Bay Area was undervalued
The couple bought their home in 2016 for around $890,000 but was valued at only $995,000 despite spending $400,000 on renovations
When their white friend posed as the owner, it went up in value to $1,482,000 - almost $500,000 more
Their friend even put photos in their home to make it appear that she lived there in a process dubbed 'whitewashing
A black couple from California are suing a real estate firm after their home went up in value by 50 per cent when they had a white friend pose as its owner.
Paul, 45, and Tenisha Tate Austin, 42, who are black and from Marin City near San Francisco had their home valued at $989,000 in January, having purchased it in 2016 for $550,000.
Following a second appraisal from a different lender the following month, they were shocked to find the home's value increased by a further $500,000. The couple credit 'whitewashing' the home of all signs of its owners' identity, and asking a Caucasian friend to pose as Tenisha for the second viewing as the reason for the jump in value.
They have now filed a fair housing lawsuit against appraiser Janette Miller, her firm Miller and Perotti Real Estate Appraisers, Inc. and national appraisal company AMC Links, LLC in the $487,500 discrepancy over the two valuations they received.

This seems sketch. Why would a real estate company intentionally devalue something they'll get commission on? If the value went up after black neighbors pretended to be white I'd 100% believe it. Tons of white people in the professional managerial class love to talk about diversity but would sooner cut off their hand than live next to black people

Maybe this article is a typo... Maybe all the neighbor's houses were valued higher without the black family living there.
Funny thing would be since so many people are moving out of the state, that they can't sell the house and now get accessed with the higher value for property taxes.

This is retarded.
The real estate agent isn't ultimately responsible for valuing your home. They give you comps and suggested ranges, but they'll never tell you "your house is worth $x."
There's nothing stopping them from pricing their home at $50 billion. It's "worth" what a buyer is willing to pay. Race never came into play here. These are race grifters looking for a payday.
Edit: Saw that it was two different appraisals. Why the hell were they paying for two appraisals out of pocket? That's insanity. And I can't imagine in San Francisco of all places there are so many racists that this would be a thing.

My in-laws were recently bitten by a low appraisal-not black so can't say that has anything to do with it.
MIL happened to be home when the appraisers came by. Said it was two people and the man didn't seem to speak English, woman spoke some English. From MIL the two were going through the condo complaining about stuff like a night light and a removable shower chair in the bathroom for FIL.
I guess they can sue the appraisal company, but I can't see them getting much in damages for the amount of time and effort it will take to sue.

So it wasn't even the same firm that adjusted their appraisal, they got a different firm to give a 2nd appraisal and got a higher result. But that doesn't prove the first firm would have adjusted their value because of whiteness. All the people trying to cash in on racism i hope eventually makes people see the light and that this whole issue is a scam.

I seen this story a while ago but looks like its back in the news again with an update or something, i guess because the lawsuit is finally going through.
Something doesnt add up. There is an almost 50% increase in the price. That is too big a difference. Real estate takes a cut of the price, if its 5% and 500k then that is 25k they would be leaving behind.
I dont know what they think they can prove in court, valuation can be subjective and they got a data size of a whopping 2 estimates. Nobody forced them to sell, if they dont like the price get a different realtor.

But there is no reason for them to sell for 33% below market value like the people trying to say. Maybe it is harder to sell those houses up on the mountain in california and if the house is chit but the land is whats worth it then you got to find someone who wants to demolish the house ect. IDK their story doesnt add up. BRB selling 33% less because Im a white supremecist real estate agent. Ok chief.

Many years back I decided to get my appraisers license because they were going to put in some stupid reqs in order to get one the next year.
I took a week long class, and had to do 40 hours of appraisal work and I was a licensed appraiser.
Here is what you do. You go to the property, don't even need to go inside, take some measurements and some photos, then you use software to find comparables. Plug in the figures in some other software as well as the photos and it spits out an appraisal.
Even though you aren't supposed too, you will appraise high or low depending on what the person paying for it wants.
Banks have caught on to an extent and now most will limit who you can use, meaning they have an approved list.
I never really used my license, it was just one of those things in which I had the time to get, so said screw it. I stopped renewing it several years back. Not sure if that means I can catch up on it again or not.

good luck to these guys proving anything in court though lol, idk if the guy was racist so not but it sounds like he just undervalued the property, something that does happen...
generally it doesnt matter when it hits the market because people will instantly bid it up. in fact that is a common tactic in real estate here, you put it up on the market for a low price to attract a bidding frenzy.
