New Laptop Question

Hellooo

Please can you help out? My old Asus i7 15" laptop has died out (hard drive has gone) and I need one asap for work again.

Whats the best laptop out there atm? Im fully aware id get better spec for money by going for a PC , but I need a laptop.

Im thinking of the new Alienware X17.

Minimum spec preferences are: 17", 4K UHD display, i9 Processor and a minimum of 1TB storage.

Not interested in going down the mac route.

I looked at razer stuff, but they all seem 1080p and i7 not i9?

Not bothered by price aslong as i can keep it somewhat below £4K

Alienware is trash, you're paying for the name, Dell bought them years ago and they just aren't worth it....

Lenovo is good, though I have had great experiences with Cyberpower PC, you can customize the laptop to be whatever you want.

Not so much gaming (will use PS4 until I get a new PC setup for that)
More heavy video editing and graphic design. With my old Asus i7, it would REALLY struggle dealing with lots of files/windows/programs open, or if i had a ton of effects/layers within photoshop or premier pro. I also would like to store a chit ton of storage on the laptop. Most videos I work with are around 1-2GB each.

The dell XPS17 and the Alienware look similar spec and similar price. Will check out the Omen.

I saw the Lenovo ThinkPad P17 Gen 2 which looked interesting with the 6TB storage - but it looks fugly like a teachers laptop or something, not that it matters lol

I work for an engineering firm and we use very demanding AutoCAD Civil 3D software and we use Lenovos for those folks and yes they are old school/clunky looking. We don't touch Dells.

I am sure you know this but the key for you is you 100% must have an SSD and not an HD.

I'd go M.2 > SSD > HD, the M.2 is noticeably faster IMO.

Dell QC is chit. Also heat management is going to be rough if you're running heavy loads on an xps

Alienware is chunky AF and you get the joy of dell customer service

Ah thats interesting. I had an HD on my last Asus, but it seems the more expensive PCs have SSDs. What's the difference? I've seen some that have 4TB SSD?

My last Asus was meant to have 1TB drive, but for some reason one of the drives was like 750gb and i could NEVER access it and it was always like hidden, so i was running off like 250gb drive and I was forever running out of space and having to delete stuff or the computer would act slow af when it got low on space.

Ive got a ton of external Harddrives which I wipe off all my content onto regularly as backups too, which always clears out a ton of storage.

Its my own company btw, incase you thought I was a r3tard for working for someone else and spending that much on just a work laptop hah.

I'm building a big 5x4m cedarwood studio in my garden too for a work studio, so once that's done I'll get a big beefy PC to do all my editing/gaming on with dual 4k monitor setup

I had an XPS 15 before, but my cat spilt my coffee on it and that was the end of that lol.

Size as in screen size? 15" works ok tbh. That's what I've been used to recently for the last 5 years or so. I just figured that I dont really transport with my laptop and occasionally watch netflix/movies on it, so bigger was better. If the price difference is like 1K GBP then I'll probably stick with 15, as I'll get big dual monitors for a PC come april/may time anyway

I'd google SSD vs HD. If you have never had an SSD you will be amazed how much faster it is the very first time you turn your computer on and Windows boots in about 2 seconds.

Ah, yep, I always forget to add the nvme to the end of it. The change was very noticeable to me when I switched but I do a lot of gaming, not sure if OP would notice much but the price difference isn't too bad.

Any other contendors? If not, which do you think is the best out of those? The alienware+Dell seem pretty on par and similar cost (probs because theyre both owned by Dell) so I'd probably edge towards the alienware one over the dell - because I plan on getting an Alienware PC too once the studio is built.

Tempted to switch to a 15" if the price drops down a lot from the 17" ones.

xps has had touchpad issues for 2 years. Like tons of them are fked. They knew it and never fixed it.

I'm not talking big screen big, I'm talking chunky, heavy big.

Lenovo legion has a nice screen, but it's not 4k. It's 2560x whatever it is, on a 16 inch, so that sweet sweet 16:10.

If it were my money, I'd either get a legion 7 fully decked, i9 11, 2x8gb (upgrade to 2x16 yourself), 3080 16gb. Probably run you about 2.5k if you find a sweet deal, 3k would be the 'average' price. I bought a 7i

Alternatively, I'd go with a razer, just because they are so sexy to look at, you can deck them out, and you can get a 4k screen.

These laptops are both pretty loud though.

Of those, I'd go for Lenovo for quality and specs, I just do not care much for Dell for various reasons but have owned a few Lenovos and only replace them when I update/upgrade, and give the old ones to family; even the Lenovo Y700 I bought about 10 years ago is still going strong. They look clunky but hey are quality.

Not so bothered about it being clunky/heavy or anything because I work from home and barely,barely ever travel with my laptop (use phone for working on then) and just schedule content before I go.

Has to be 4K screen though because I shoot in 4K, so it would be a nightmare if it wasnt that.

The Razers looked nice, but they were all i7 and not 4K. Is 4K an aftermarket tuning setup? or from spec from the razer company?v

Thats interesting. You can't beat quality.

The only thing that could be an issue for me, is because I do so much photographic/video editing work, I'd need the screen colours/graphics to be really on point and crystal clear so that my colour grading is all ok and stuff. Would alienware be better because thats a gaming style laptop rather than Lenovo?

Like would I need to look at DPI, or Frame rates or something? I'm such a tech newb I dont know that right words to be saying here hahah.

just remember with the stronger specs you might be limited by cooling on the laptop just something to keep in mind especially in a 4k display? that gpu will bepegged to the max

edit remember with photo editing you want an IPS panel to be true to color

Stay away from Hewlett-Packard, I know of someone who bought one new, and it broke down; I also bought one new and it broke down on me.


Dell is good though.

Frame rate is more for gaming, look at resolution and read reviews on screen quality; again Cyberpower PC might be worth checking, full customize a laptop to only have what you need and want.

What does VR Ready mean for some of these laptops btw? I always thought VR headsets were headsets, not that they had any integration for VR? Will make my mind up on something tomorrow and pull the trigger on it. Tempted to go with 15" as ive never found my current 15" laptop to be too small and figured it would be easier to transport (lighter/smaller) if and when I do use it for that. Also if im going to get big dual 4K UHD monitor Setup with a new PC in May, it seems a waste to pay an extra £500-600 for the sake of 4-5 months or so.

Is 4TB on the Alienware or 6GB on the lenovo Overkill? Would 2TB suffice? or for the sake of a £300 upgrade or so, is it worth going for the 4TB option.

Not sure what I'm leaning to atm. I'm kinda thinking the Alienware. It looks the coolest and has WAY better spec than my current one. The Razer one looks good, but dont know if its out yet, same with the MSI one above.

So Alienware / MSI or Razer.

Lenovo looks like a geography teachers laptop, which i know is dumb to take into consideration - but it just looks bulky and from the 90s.

What does VR Ready mean for some of these laptops btw? I always thought VR headsets were headsets, not that they had any integration for VR? VR ready mainly means you can run VR through the laptop into a headset like a Rift S or a Valve Index, the Oculus Quest runs off its own integrated system but can also run off a computers to play bigger games but if you dont plan on using VR dont worry about it, because some people buy laptops to run VR so they like to slap that title right on the box
