I do hate how the settlement amounts are always confidential, and in effect the media companies get to escape publicly admitting that they knowingly engaged in defamation.

In each of these cases, it's almost always "fear of discovery" that leads to settlements. The producers and news people at NBC probably have bajillions of emails, text messages, internal memos and saved calls all saying something to the effect of "let's ruin this smirker's life."
