The pain is real. [VID] what makes one keep going?

Hope this is still a lifting site in some ways. Not many people here still left that can relate to 20+ years of training and the struggle to keep going. But wanted to share something other than a 'car' post. This is actually what brought me to BB.com many years ago.

Struggle is real. This is a different kind of vid. Been slowly trying to bring my back to handle loads again. Been 3 years since spinal fracture and 3 disk injuries, and I was holding out hope I had made some progress rehabbing. Have not had pain in almost 4 months. And was really holding out hope. Even going up to 405 deads trying to train my lower back up again. I have tried several times over the past years to get my back healthy and failed, but this felt different.

So I wanted to finish out 2021 on a high note. I put on 315 for a no handed squat. It felt fine. This used to be very light for me. On the way down my back went into full spasm. You can see I bring my hands forward to support the weight some. Barely moving today. Pain through my toes and like ice picks in my back.

I am almost 50 now. WTF am I doing this for? I am not sure, and will have to reconcile when I feel better. I dont want to be reactionary, but I may have to just give up on the thought I might heal.

That looked painful op.

Looking at your stats (if not frauding) - you've already achieved some pretty good numbers that most people never will. Why not focus on something else for a change? Take it as a challenge - not as a blow to your ego. Lifting heavy is not the only thing you can do. Try focusing on something else like getting the most amount of muscle growth with the least amount of weight. Better mind muscle connection, improving your balance, flexibility and overall health.

Not sure if I managed to relay exactly what I mean, but what I wanted to say is that there are many other things you can do outside of heavy lifting. Heck - you can pick an entirely new sport if you like.

Good luck and hope you improve quick!

At a certain point you need to shift from heavy weights to more stretching/calisthenics based training.
I understand you’ve done heavier but it’s just part of getting older m8.

Yea, I was bullet proof till the accident 3 years ago. Did not seem bad when it happened, but I just have never been able to recover. Hoping, going slow. But it has not really improved.

For pretty much the last 3 years that has been the case. I lift now like it is part of my routine, where as for years I loved it. I always trained for strength because I loved it. I love the competition with myself. I was never a 'bodybuilder'. The gym is a very small portion of what I do. But I still yearn to be able to challenge myself. I had made another attempt and this was 4 months without any pain building back up slowly, and then this. So I just need to find the path.

Of course. I have reconciled that my best days are probably behind me. I am ok with that and nothing to prove to anyone else.

315 should be nothing for me and it is frustrating. This was not that long ago, and not being able to recover from the car accident is frustrating.

gotta train smarter

stubbornness when it comes to lifts due to habit, is one of the worst things for longevity in the gym

Plenty of ways to get solid leg training and gains/decent legs from movements that don't load the spine. Also massively increasing ROM (building up to it...not just straight away) is another solid way to get more out of less weight. Follow a lot of Mike Israetel (big advocate of ROM, way past what typical gym bros do)

also kneesovertoesguy flipped my entire take on lower body training. Ran his program couple of years back. Lower body has never felt better, mobility has never been better. knees feel amazing(use to have nearly constant pain in my right knee, not severe but always there....thats gone) and gained more development, esp in quads.

I'll check out that guy for sure! The no handed squats are just that. A way to use light weight and do very large ROM and get good stim. I have not even attempted to conventional squat in 3 years. Just been doing leg press and no handed work. I started bringing in light deads since after 2 years I could not get my back to feel better. The deads helped. I started at 135 and have worked up to 405 over the last 4 months. Zero pain. That is why I did not think the 315 squat would be an issue. But sadly that is not the case.

Just sharing a bump in the road. It is by no means the first, and wont be the last. It is part of the grind. Been at this a long time and not going to quit. Still adapting. Looking to turn 50 in about a year, and not in bad shape for a guy my age. This is just part of the struggle.

ZERO knee issues ever. Deads and squats have actually been the foundation of my physique. It is how I put the thickness on my frame. I am very old school. Up until 5 or 6 years ago, I never even did iso stuff. Just large compound training with the focus being strength in the 3-8 rep range.

I was never a lean person either. The focus on being lean-ish came in the last 6 or 7 years. I was pretty amazed what was hiding for years under the body fat I carried.

I also trained 95% of my life as a lifetime natty. Currently at 'natural' levels, just controlled externally. I dont think you can build a physique naturally without training this way. I still get many people who comment on the 'quality' mass I carry. I am not a big guy. I am 5'9 200lbs, but I have very thick and dense development. That came from years of training heavy. At least for me it did.

But coming to the realization that I cant do it forever. Were it not for the recent car accident, I have been accident and major injury free my entire gym life. Have got hurt outside the gym plenty of times. But I always knew my limit and did very little 1rm work except in a comp here and there.

I think this is actually the first squat I have ever ditched in my life. SRS. In 20 plus years, never had to ditch.

I can't bring myself to watch it.

Do you ever do front squats? Load in the front, so very little pressure on your back.

Nothing graphic. Just go down and decide it would be better not to come back up so I leaned over and let the weight on to safeties. But back was spasmed at that point. A little tough getting up

I have hip mobility issues, from my 'big' accident, and shoulder difficulties make it hard for me the hold the bar in a front squat config. No handed have been my go-to since it forces me to have such tight form. Never would have thought this would have done this, but it did.

It is what sucks. Since the car accident, my back is unpredictable. When it first happened, sometimes something as little as picking up an Amazon package would do it. I had thought the rehab / strengthening I have been doing was working. Have not even felt a twinge of pain in 4 months even with moderate deads.

Just need to go back to light weight and keep working. Though about getting a safety squat bar also. My buddy has a hip belt platform which is cool but to much real-estate in the gym.

I have actually kept up my legs with a lot of TUT despite not beging able to train heavy past 3 years. I have lost a little size, but I have been on a fasting kick for the past 6 months and not eaten at a surplus with the intent of trying to build mass in years.

Thanks for the support and have a great new year!

I’m not sure what I’ve got going on but I have to be careful squatting deadlifting and leg pressing. I used to squat 405 8 times without warming up. Deadlifted 405 like a gorilla telling it. People actually called me white gorilla. One day while leg pressing something popped abd I almost had to crawl to the bathroom. Hurt two weeks but was fine. Then at work at a furniture hub we lift couches off of pallets. Do hundreds daily so without thinking you just deadlift them off of pallets and one was strapped down and I didn’t know it. Holy hell I was in pain for a month. Could not even put my shoes on. Been to chiropractor but they claim my spine is one of the healthiest ones that they have seen. I’m fine now but something feels vulnerable now. No way I’ll risk going super heavy ever again. And tbh that was stupid what you just did. You had no support and all of that weight pushed you forward. Proper form is what we should be practicing anyway.

I’ll also say this. I’ve noticed at my age diet is important. Your organs swell also and if you have a lot of food in you pressure will be high at certain spots in your spine and it will hurt. The day I hurt mine I just had eaten 2 medium pizzas and 8 wings from Pizza Hut. Then I was doing the leg press with like 10 plates or something and pop. Omg that was hell. Make sure you are drinking tons of water. All that matters at our age is that we can work and smash 🐱

As long as you have been lifting you might already be aware of front squat grip options. Just dropping a link in case you might be interested:

Thank you for posting. I have tried all those. Just never found a good groove. It is as much a hip thing as it is shoulder. But sincere thanks. Even with as many years as I have in the gym, I am always still learning!

The weight did not push me forward. I leaned if forward to set it down. Relative to my strength that is very light. My only issue is my back did not like it on the way down. Doing no-handed has been my go to for a bunch of years. Forces you to keep the most strict of form and keeping core tight.

This is purely a lower back stability issue. Not a form one. Been training a few years and doing squats like this for 6 or 7 years. Only thing that matters is weight transfer is through heals. Weight can not 'bend' you over if you are through the heals. It will be the natural ratios and levers that your body uses. Only way to have weight bend you over, is if you go on your toes. Eg, good morning style.

Just at some point, a person might recognize that others here have been training a while. If I have to tell you what the point of a no-handed squat is, I recognize that your knowledge of training is probably limited. If I have to explain, you would not understand. Also, you have been on here for 9 years. You want me to take you seriously, post some pics to show me what you have accomplished in the last 9 years of training.

Why a no handed squat? Have you tried a safety bar if you have shoulder problems?

I understand you’ve done heavier but it’s just part of getting older m8.

No you don't, injuries, especially overuse injuries are what fuks you up. You really need a professional to help you out if that's the case, though sometimes you just need to call it quits because the body doesn't heal back properly.

I trained front rack position solely when front squatting for the past 8 years. Started the cross arm position again 2 squat sessions ago and holy chit has it been humbling. Also doing a hypertrophy block (8-12 reps for all compounds), which is also humbling.

Good luck, OP. Haven’t visited snap city in years, but have been dealing with lower back discomfort for almost all of 2021 due to reasons outside the gym. All part of the journey.

That’s a lot of weight for one wrong move.
