Die Hard is an amazing movie, but this scene is incoherent (Ellis)

It's one of my favourite movies, and I can barely fault it all, but this scene is just a bit of a plot hole.

Here Ellis attempts to negotiate with Hans in an effort to save himself, presumably. But listen to what he says: "Tell these guys where the detonators are so no one else gets hurt."

This should have clued Ellis in that something was afoot and the "no one else gets hurt" line is BS. What do detonators do, Ellis? Why would Hans want denotators for? Maybe, just maybe, they're for......detonatingsomething?

Plot hole here, IMO. Ellis should have realized chit was going down and precisely the opposite of "no one getting hurt" would happen if Hans got the denotators back. Still a dick move to shoot Ellis, though.
Back off, Warchild.

Seriously.

Ellis is coked up out of his mind.
He’s not thinking at all.

The plot hole is that Ellis doesn’t tell Hans who McClain is and Hans doesn’t seem to care to ask.

You do realize Ellis was a complete moron, right?

All he cared about was saving his own ass and this was his way to get in with the thieves.

For a pseudo intellect, you need to work harder, OP

How did the C4 go off by dropping it down an elevator hatch? It was attached to a computer chair and monitor.

WRONG, idiot.

You don’t work for Nakatomi Corporation by being a “complete moron.” This isn’t like working for Walmart HQ in Arkansas. We’re talking about a company that owns one of the most iconic buildings in LA.

Ellis is just coked up. You’d be making some poor judgment calls too if you’d done several lines in the bathroom before the company’s Christmas party.

BRB, googling “how do detonators work” and landing on an FBI watchlist.

The best part of this was when the henchman pours him a glass of “coke”

Coked up, sure, but he still should have realized Hans desperation to get the detonators back was bad news, and precisely the opposite to no one else getting hurt. Coke or no coke, if one is held hostage by terrorists and they really, really want detonators, it might be a reasonable inference to the effect that they intend to blow chit up.

You're equally as dumb as OP. Ellis was a low IQ office rat who was only concerned with his own ass. He thought he could make good with the thieves and was even too stupid to realize that telling the truth might have saved him better than lying. Stay mad

Brah, from what I can tell, when you’re on coke those things don’t even occur to you. We have our own impulsive narcissist Cokehead on the MISC. He paid prostitutes to spend a whole night with him even though he couldn’t get it up, and he had no way of paying for it - so the next day he tells his mom and stepdad to pay for the prostitutes.

There were many instances where common sense could have stopped him, but it didn’t.

******* is a helluva drug.

LOL @ thinking Mr. Takagi would have a “low IQ office rat” negotiating deals for Nakatomi Corp.

Mr. Takagi pays Ellis a salary so high that Ellis bought Holly a Rolex watch and he ain’t even banging her. That’s “fuk you” money. Mr. Takagi doesn’t pay “fuk you” money to a “low IQ office rat.”

Next you’re going to say Mr. Takagi was low IQ for saying “you’ll just have to kill me.”

leaving one goon with sole responsibility of all the detonators was a cringe move on hans part

it would have made more sense to have distributed the detonators to a small squad who shouldn't follow the same logistical path

But the detonators posed no threat to the hostages, they were to blow the vault. Ellis was smart enough to realise terrorists don't just kill hostages with C4. As soon as they blow the vault and get the bonds, they are out of there and the hostages are free. He was looking out for himself and trying to smash Holly by being the hero.

I say no plot hole.

Ellis was on cocaina, he wasn't necessarily smart, he was just a good salesman. He thought he could talk his way out of it and failed.

John Mc Tiernan is a very under-rated director in general.
I remember he had some legal trouble a while back. I assume Hollywood distanced themselves from him after that, because I dont see how he isn't still a highly successful director.

also Ellis was at a Christmas work party the use of coke would be rife in such setting especially in LA, yet miscers are quick to tag him as cokehead he might not have indulged in such practises during normal work hours

And apparently the detonators were impact based. Not based on a timer. Not based on remote detonation.

Just good old ww2 style bombs where you drop from high up elevation and wait for impact to set them off.

My exact thought

In that situation you think the terrorists need the detonators for the vault/safe. He realized they were somewhat savvy and there for money. Blowing up all the hostages would make no sense in that situation if you werent aware of the master plan
