5 years to create a masterpiece. Easily the most detailed and realistic game of all time. Well worth it.

I just started playing rdr2 and God damn is it slow. I can tell what a beautiful game it is but the first hour is just a snooze. More movie then game so far.

Honestly hard to believe how old gta v is. Still holds up with graphics and gameplay.

Couldn't get into RDR2. Thought the controls were wonky and it just wasn't fun to play. Thought the story was good but I lasted about 15 hours until I took a break and haven't touched it since.

Shame what they've become. Obviously they're killing it with all the microtransactions but they're losing relevance as an actual maker of games much like Valve did when they wouldn't use some of those hundreds of millions of dollars to make new games.

GTA online changed everything for Rockstar. They make insane amounts of money without having to create a completely new game. So they put most of their focus on there.
There is but one path....we kill them all.

It's crazy that they released GTA 3, Vice City, and Sand Andreas within a 3 year period. Not to mention releasing Max Payne 1 & 2 and Manhunt. They really had an awesome streak.

gta online was a huge mistake.

Completely robbed us of single player games from them. Now we have to wait 5-10 years for a single player rockstar experience.

Yeah RDR2 is a little slow, but it should be for a western based game with horses and lever actions compared to fast cars and smg's in GTAV. It's just as much a game as it is a movie. I thought it was utterly incredible with the attention to detail, the story, and the satisfaction from the first one.

I know they own the rights now, but it is odd to see Max Payne 1 & 2 on that chart when Rockstar had nothing to do with them during production.

This. I have a strong suspicion that when Rockstar finally DOES make a new game, like GTA VI, it's going to leave a lot of people disappointed in the same way Cyberpunk followed up W3.

Also side note, RDR2 was trash. There were some things it did very well, but the overall game was boring AF.

Except it's just a boring cowboy simulator. They spent 5 years to produce a boring, overrated game, and stopped producing anything interesting.

It's even more amazing when you consider how GOAT those games were, and how that PS2 era was when they produced the best games they ever made. I mean they probably didn't spent more than a year on any of the games they produced back then, and they are games that I can still have fun with and fully enjoy to this day.

Really, this whole thing shows off how much the entire industry has changed, and why that whole early 00's era was still the golden age of gaming. They were just pumping out fun as phuck games on the regular, now we are lucky if we get some boring game that wants to be a movie every half a decade.

Can't believe Vice City came less than 3 years after GTA 2. That time period of gameplay and graphics progression was nuts.

The PS1 - PS2 generation was lit! Just a crazy time to be into gaming, back when I was a big Playstation fan, they were just pumping out tons of fun, creative, easily accessible games back then. Like back in those days you would have developers you liked, and they would be pumping out great games every year. Heck I remember EA being one of my favorite publishers back then, says a lot about how drastically everything changed when the PS3/360 generation hit.

HD gaming, patches, and DLC ruined the gaming scene in many ways. It turned game development into massive projects that take forever and it made the developers lazy about releasing their games. With DLC and patches they have an incentive to basically treat games like a beta when they release. Like not only do we have to wait forever for games to be released these days, but we gotta wait about another year after they release for them to actually be finished and sold with all the content. Heck some games get worked on for multiple years after they release, with added content slowly being trickled down.

the industry got too big and started making too much money, so they got the attention of the wall street investors, and consequently the suits came in to maximize profits and ruin all the fun

now the big AAA releases are all safe bets with gameplay youve already seen.

the real golden age of gaming right now is in PC gaming. indie devs are coming out with amazing games every year.

Yup, you know it. I think the reason why I loved the gaming scene so much more back in the 90's and early 00's is how it still felt like a genuinely passionate hobbyist scene. Like everybody who was into gaming back then was into it simply because they really enjoyed video games. Now a days there is so much money in it that it has attracted all sorts of people who don't really have much in the way of genuine interest or passion for video games, they just see them or the gaming scene as a way to make money. You can just see the results of that all over these days.

I think the PC scene has managed to for the most part escape the problems that has been effecting the console industry due to the way PC gaming is still for the most part a passionate hobbyist scene. Like your average Joe or Jane isn't going to go out and buy a gaming PC. That and the PC gaming scene is just far more direct for aspiring developers, there's a lot less red tape. I think that's the main reason I still got a gaming PC, I don't really think much of the graphics as being an incentive these days, but there is just loads of games that I can only play on the PC that totally grab my interests in ways that the AAA industry has continuously failed to do.

100%

gonna recommend some excellent PC games

- RimWorld (simple graphics, 2D. But super fun. Colonists crash land on a colonized, but hostile, planet. You start with meager supplies and have to build up your colony, your base, research tech, defend from raids, trade with other factions, travel the map, etc. Your colonists CAN and will die, and you have to accept that, and always keep an eye out for potential new colonists to join you. Really fun game with a unique story each time you play.)

- Due Process (simple graphics, FPShooter. A baby between Rainbow Six Siege + Counter-Strike, but lets you draw on the map (everyone sees your drawings) and plan with your team, etc., fun game.)

Yeah but has anyone surpassed GTA V even in all the years since?

Serious question by the way, I'm curious what you guys think.

2 games in a decade is slow for sure but aren't both considered absolute masterpieces.

the biggest streamers on twitch, like xQc with 70,000 viewers a stream, plays GTA V roleplay servers daily.

they have a whole online city with players running the police department, players as criminals robbing banks and stuff, people working at the burgershots and selling houses and etc.

GTA V just lends itself to incredible replay value.

Rdr2 ain't it. Outdated mission structure, repetitive, and drags on and on.
